Album artwork -where does it go if I'm using external HD

I'm using a Mac and  itunes with the music on an external hard drive

 

i wanted to know where the album artwork is stored? On the Mac in a folder or along with the music files on the external hard drive?

Itunes uses its own way (Of course)

 

the artwork that it find for your is from the app store and put in a database, sometimes the music is imbedded.

 

For any that does not make the transition find the artwork as a jpeg and call it 'folder' and put in with the album.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear 

 

its albums ripped in itunes and I wanted to know where itunes stored the artwork having done get album artwork ie somewhere in the Mac or on the external drive where the music is stored?

In the file itself (if format supports it). Also in local cache in folder 'Album Artwork'.

iTunes always "touches" the song file, when you update the song's metadata (including artwork)
