Considering Uniti or UnitiQute or ??

Posted by: spc on 16 February 2011

Can someone give me the pro's and con's of which way is best?

I currently have a Transporter feeding my Naim 282/250 but looking for a small setup for my living room and would like to consider an all-in-one and some nice bookshelf speakers.  Any recommendations on Bookshelf speakers is also welcome.

I'm currently running SqueezeServer on a QNAP 439pro and guessing I'll have to install a UPnP or something to feed my Flac library to the Uniti.

Thanks in advance

The QNAP has UPNP built it. just enable it from the web interface

Since you already are on the SqueezeServer platform, just get a SB Touch and a 2nd hand integrated, nait 5, XS or SN if you can stretch (in this case you also benefit of the internal dac)...It's not really a one-box solution, but really not far away!

Get uniti if you need cd or need the 50w amp for the speakers. Otherwise get the unitiq?

Hi

I am using a Qute with Dynaudio Excite X12's connected with Chord Odyssey cable as a desktop system.  Sounds fantastic.

Depends if you need CD - for a small setup the Qute will do just fine.

Monitor Audio Silver RX2 would be great - but the Neat Motive 2 is lovely.

Uniti sounds better.  Qute is underpowered.  Uniti has slightly better preamp section built in.

You should read the Qute review here: http://www.tonepublications.co.../toneaudio-issue-29/

I think they liked it!

'Anyone who gets rid of their Nait 2 rues the day'. But what if you sold it to get a 'Qute'?

My dealer actually told me not to listen to qute after I got uniti.

He said for unknown reason, it's actually better than uniti in sq.

Well, I did listen to them via a pair of small Cambridge speakers and it actually did sound fantastic except for the bass which was a bit unnatural because it came from a subwoofer mostly. More a fault of the speakers.

Well, if you don't need a cd player and dont need to drive too hungry speakers, this little box is indeed magic.

I had considered a used Nait 2 to pair with a Squeezebox Touch but haven't been able to locate one recently - still looking.

I'd probably choose the UnitiQute over the Uniti for size and doubts I'll ever use the CD.  Plus, I've heard more than one person say the Qute sounds better..

Speakers are still a question mark..

No the Qute doesn't sound better than the Uniti - IMHO of course.

I have owned both - they sound about the same. Qute through NAP200 sounds better than both. Qute looks better than Uniti and has won lots of WAF points.

What cables did you use when connecting NAP200 to UQ? I guess it's 4 pin DIN - Phono.

Whas in naim cables or what?

@Orangutan - Uniti sounds better IMHO via Nap 200
@Tonkis Q - standard Naim cable supplied with Nap 200

Is NAP200 also delivered with DIN-PHONO cables? Just so I don't missunderstand..

No DIN only.

Now now now, adding nap200 to compare is totally unfair!

why?

I have seen some Gotham cables (Phono - 4pin DIN). Is this a good cable for connecting UQ and a NAP?

Comparing NAP200 on Qute against Qute and Uniti alone is utterly unfair???

No - I thought we were comparing Uniti/Nap 200 and Qute/Nap 200

Tested Qute and Uniti with Sonus Fabers, the Uniti was one grade better.  Fuller sound, better resolution, better transients, large scale sound.  Audible difference.

I am using a Chord Anthem 2 DIN to RCA cable.
Qute sounds about the same as Uniti at sensible volumes on efficient speakers.
Adding a NAP200 to either sounds better than either without a NAP200.

Also, controvertially, I am testing using a Muscial Fidelity X-Tone between the Qute and NAP200 - tone controls!  No doubt this compromises overall sound quality, but as a child of the graphic eqalizer age, I really value tweaking the sound to my preferences.  Rather happy with it so far.
