NDX malfunction?
Posted by: naimtheday on 01 June 2014
I have just connected an NDX to my system and when switched on only four of the buttons light up and the display panel doesn't. It had been flown long haul so maybe got shaken at some point. Anyone got any bright ideas, is ther a way to reset for example? i connected an iPod 160 classic via USB but could hear no sound through system. NDX is connected via analogue cable to 52, only other power is to mains lead.
i am new to NDX so gather I need to get a nas, any suggestions for most reliable, easy to set up with raid for security. ISP is virgin and have super hub - need to run cat cable approx 6 metres
any help much appreciated.

I've swiched the SuperHub to modem only and connected everything through a Belkin Router.
Not sure about your NDX issue I'm afraid.

Have you got the link plug inserted ?
Have you got the link plug inserted ?
As in this thing
It's the display cable that has been disconnected. I've had the same problem with mine... Get it to your dealer for repair...
Thanks for your replies, i have the link plug fitted but suspected something had come loose in transport.
Keen to get the storage side sorted, anyone got any ideas on an easy way to do it? Need 2tb storage and want raid for safety.
cheers

Problem resolved - I had a look inside and noticed that the ribbon cable to the display panel looked slightly out of line so I removed and replaced it and now it works! Thanks for the suggestions
(I had netgear ReadyNAS which was difficult to set up.)

Quite a few of us have one or two.
Thanks guys for your help. I have now installed Synology NAS which is populated with my music files but I can't get the NDX to see it. NDX is attached by network cable to NAS and NAS by cable to Virgin Superhub Router.
NDX sees cable connection so no need to do it wireless but despite appearing to be connected it is "blind"
Is there a step by step guide to set it up, I am keen to listen to music via NDX so any help as always much appreciated
Cheers

You need to connect both the NAS and the NDX to the router directly, or ideally run a lead from the router to a switch and then connect the NAS and NDX to the switch.
Thanks Hungryhalibut,
I have connected both NAS and NDX via a gigabit switch and the NDX is now seeing and playing music but via the NDX remote it means trawling through thousands of tracks to find what I want.
I installed n-stream and n-serve on my iPad but there still seems to be a problem with it not seeing the server. Does anyone have any ideas please?
Great. The NDX is now seeing the server or it wouldn't play music via remote. Delete nStream from the ipad and reinstall. It should then work.
nServe has no purpose for you unless you have an HDX, UnitiServe or NS01.
Thanks again, I have managed to delete it but can't find it in Itunes store which is where I thought it came from?
Forget that, found it in App store, too little sleep addles the brain
Does it now work?
Now working to a degree, the NDX is seeing the music on my iPod, PC and laptop but not on the NAS!
Ipad can control music but not volume. Still transferring music to the NAS so will wait until finished then will reboot all devices in case that sorts it all. I will revert once I have more info. Thanks for your sage advice earlier

To control volume, you need a little wire between the NDX and the preamp. Have a look at the back of the NDX and you'll see the socket. Trouble is, I suspect that the 52 predates this facility.
You need to check that the NAS is visible to the NDX; make sure that the share you are using has both admin and guest access, and that it is available on the network. Hopefully someone a bit more tech-savvy can help on that. Have you fixed the IP addresses on both the NAS and NDX? If not, get that done, as it will make things more stable.
Assuming that your NAC 52 is not an ancient, pre-RC5 unit, all you need is an IR repeater connected to an IR emitter, which then can be placed on the front of the NAC 52. It is not necessary to have a demodulated RC5 jack (RCA phono) on the rear of the preamp!
This effectively means that all olive RC5-compatible remote preamps can be integrated with ND5 XS / NDX / NDS, provided that you use an IR emitter fed from a repeater, whose input is fed from the 3.5mm jack on the streamer.
The repeater is necessary to power the IR emitter....
I seem to be struggling here. The NDX isn't seeing the NAS despite a full reset of NDX, router, switch, iPad etc. From NDX only appears to see my PC stored music, wont play it though unless I use the iPad. What NDX saw but couldn't play was showing on n-Stream and from there I can play it to my system.
I have shared everything on the NAS so don't get why it isn't showing.
I can access all the music on the NAS via Synology Filestation which shows on my PC
Have you downloaded the Synology upnp media server software from the package centre? Without this it cannot serve the files to the streamer.
Don't worry, you'll get there. I had far more trouble than this! It's not you being dim, the whole process is very confuzzling.
Ah, now I have downloaded and installed the media server from synology the NDX sees the NAS.
I had created folders for different music outside the "music" folder which it would not see so I moved them across into the "music" folder and at last the NDX is seeing the music on the NAS!
Many thanks to Hunryhalibut for your patient assistance.
Next job is to see if I can get the volume controlled from my iPad. I was hoping to find a solution without resorting to DavidDever's IR repeater method as I think that would be visible and stuck to the face of my 52? My brother has a similar set up and thinks he can control volume from Ipad or IPhone but he has the Indignity (you know what I mean?) instead of the NDX, maybe that makes a difference.
My 52 is a later one, from memory made about 3 years before the change from Olive
Result! Well done. Make sure you set up a backup in due course, which will guarantee further fun and hair loss.

You could also use a blaster (wider aperture, does not require the act of sticking it to your NAC 52).
The NDX or NDS feeds the IR repeater via a 3.5mm tip-sleeve plug; the repeater is typically a 12VDC powered affair (e.g., Xantech or Speakercraft over here, QED Systemline over there), to which either an emitter (direct contact) or a blaster (wider spread) can be used.

Thanks David, would that then "read" instructions from my iPad so I can control the volume and mute that way?
Yes, it would do that.
