A thread in which to discuss the first tranche of Led Zeppelin reissues

Posted by: Kevin-W on 02 June 2014

I thought that as so many Forumites will be getting these in the next day or so we could incorporate all your impressions in one place.

If you've got your LPs, CDs, hi-res downloads or Super Deluxe boxes, what do you think? How do you rate the presentation and packaging? What do you think of the extra material? And what of the mastering/pressing?

Given the amount of FUD that has been spread here and across the interwebs, these past few months it might be useful that anyone commenting on the SQ actually listens to their vinyl, CDs or downloads first.

Am looking forward to hearing everyone's impressions!

Interesting John and gratefully received. Care to elaborate any? We don't all have the BD CDs so I'll be interested to hear what you compared it to, even if only from your memory. I've got some very raw sounding Zep CDs.

Not very good at describing sound differences but the 24/96 versions seem to have more clarity, detail and control than any CD or vinyl version I have heard before. I have the Classic Records vinyl versions and the latest vinyl versions from the box set - both versions are good but I believe the 24/96 is better. Perhaps not surprising if the latest vinyl version is sourced from a digital file in the first place? Hardware maybe a factor here as I am using an NDS for the 24/96 and a Gyrodec for vinyl. I love the Gyrodec but usually find it a few steps behind the NDS on other albums.

I really like the 24-96 versions a lot.

I own the Barry D. cd's but have not a/b'ed them yet.  Barry's cd's were always enjoyable, that's for sure.

Thank you John and Bart. I think I'll have a punt.

I've only ordered 1 because I'm not terribly interested in out takes, alternative versions etc as I've plenty of them and don't tend to listen to them. Are 2 and 3 worth buying for the original albums themselves? Do they sound that much better than the original cds?

Posted on: 06 June 2014 by count.d

Not been tempted to buy these yet, as I have the full set of Classic Records which I think are excellent.

Super Deluxe or just vinyl Steve?

Deluxe vinyl only Kevin. I find box sets take Up too much space and I only play the vinyl anyway.

I have gone for the standard single LPs and the deluxe HiRes downloads. Don't need the bonus tracks on the LPs.

LZ II and III vinyl: it's well worth buying the doubles with the bonus tracks when they only cost 4 quid more on Amazon uk!

The bonus tracks are really good imo, and i'm impressed enough with the II and III vinyl quality i’ve ordered the triple set too, should arrive in a week or so : )

Too impatient to go out and get the vinyl, so just downloaded the hi res version of Zeppelin II.

Still has that too clean digital quality, but does have the analogue quality that when you turn it way up, it doesn't hurt your ears, just pounds your heart. Isn't perfect, but SO much better than what's out there.

I'm totally psyched to finally be able to enjoy these albums again. Though, I stick with my conclusion that the best ever version of Zeppelin was on cassette on a cheap  car stereo at age 18.

Owning the first 4 albums on Plum/Red I have no intention to buy the remastered versions. However, after listening to the Jimmy Page interview on Planet Rock last Sunday I would like the other material. I guess you can't have one without he other

Why not dip your toe in and try one of the three which you most fancy the extra material for. They all offer good additional music and sound great too. Won't break the bank.

I have a clean Plum/Red II and the new pressing is actually better in some ways - particularly in the area of detail. At very least it will give you a different 'take' but you might be surprised just how good the new masters are.

I keep vacillating on which format to get. The delux sets look very nice but at £90 a pop a tad expensive v the likely amount of times I will look/listen at the extra stuff.

Think I'm about to pull the trigger on the standard vinyl and the hi res downloads. Where are you guys in the UK downloading the hi res from?

thanks

Gary

Just downloaded all three Deluxe version from HDTracks, 96/24 for the main album music some of the extras are at 44.1/16 and a mixture.

I used HDTracks. About five minutes later someone told me about LiveDpwnloads. Cheaper than HDT and  I'm told it's not IP restricted, although I don't know that.

So far I have given I at 24/96 a good listening to and it's the best version I have ever owned. It's never going to be audiophile but there is detail and timing which gives insight into the performance - which is what it's all about.

I used hiresaudio.com

I have found these remasters outstanding - I guess first, plum and classic pressings have reduced in value this week..........these for many will be the go to recordings from now on.

This exactly reflects my opinion

HDT offered 10% off which was about the same as HiRes audio price, HDT lets me have WAV (probably converted anyway) so I went that route.

Will look at LiveDownloads, there is also ProStudioMasters which is Canada based.

With downloads though I can't see any regional/world pricing that makes one standout more than the other, so HDT wins for me for now as it appears to have more choice, and WAV download option (yep still like my WAVs I'm afraid)

Still waiting for that killer site that just nails it though

I've just had a look at these sites and, even from the US, the hi res albums cost more than their vinyl equivalents.

Thanks for comments, really helpful. Is HD tracks open to the UK now?

hi res audio are charging £17, not sure if that is a fair price

The Deluxe downloads including the extra tracks/disc two material were $29.95 with 10% off that was $26.95, converted to £16.01 on the PayPal conversion, so 99p cheaper

I bought all three in one lump at £48.03 converted price.

Every little helps.

Not sure how you get that. Deluxe Vinyl on amazon  - 29.99 for 1 and 20.99 for other two. Hires download of deluxe version £17 or less.

I downloaded direct from Warner's using the voucher code in the box set. Absolutely no meta data other than song title and no album album art! Currently adding this manually.

Hd tracks is out as it doesn't like my URL........

Will try hi res audio this evening

I like WAV too, but the  commonly available format can be converted, so it's OK.

Didn't go for the Deluxe versions. They seem somewhat overpriced, at least to me. We each have our own tipping point. I guess I'm not that big a fan although I've never stopped listening to them and the video material gets watched about every six months.

For me it's the telepathic interplay and timing. This seems to come across better than ever on the new release, at least at 24/96. I don't have any other versions.
