Rik Mayall RIP

Posted by: rodwsmith on 09 June 2014

At slight risk of upsetting Mick, I think this deserves a thread. Another part of my growing up gone, Mayall was the rare combination of a great comedian AND actor, and being good at each was why he was so good at the other. 56 is too young. Sad news.

Sad news indeed!

Worryingly young. What a shame.

Absolutely awful news - for a generation of fourty-somethings who shared their student days with 'The Young One's' Rick will be forever remembered as a wonderfully innovative and characterful performer.  Some of his stuff was a bit crazy for my taste but for me his finest hours were in the self-penned one hour mini films he produced as 'Rick Mayall Presents' and in particular the episode 'Dancing Queen' which was a cinematic masterpiece and starred Helena Bonham Carter as you've never seen her before.  It's one of the few films that has actually reduced me to tears with poignancy and also laughter in the space of 60 minutes - sheer unadulterated genius...

The world down here has become a little less funny today but the world up there will soon be a far happier place.

Rest in peace Rick.

My how The Young Ones made me laugh when I was still at school and Rick was such an important part of that show's success.  I'll never forget it.

A shock indeed.  Became a fan from the Young Ones although I think his character of Alan B'stard is probably my favourite. He seemed to capture the essence of the uncaring, in-it-for-me theme of the Thatcher years wonderfully and hilariously well. I wouldn't be surprised if even Mrs T has a quiet s****** to herself.

Very sad indeed.at my age I pretty much followed his career from my twenties, and how he made me laugh.just goes to say don't put off what do want to do in life.

From "Bottom":

Richie: What about pin the tail on the donkey?

Eddie: We haven't got a donkey.

Richie: Well, pin the tail on the chicken.

Eddie: We haven't got a tail.

Richie: Oh. Well, pin the sausage on the chicken?

Eddie: We haven't got a chicken.

Richie: Well, pin the sausage on the fridge.

Eddie: Or a pin.

Richie: Sellotape a sausage to the fridge!

Eddie: We haven't got a sausage!

Richie: Put a bit of sellotape on the fridge!

Eddie: It's not much of a game, is it?

'Nursie' has gone too.

If I was Tim McInnerny, I'd be careful with the curling tongs Darling.

Bottom is the only series I've ever bothered to buy on DVD.

The nativity scene in the Christmas episode "Holy", with Richie, Eddie, Spudgun and Dave Hedgehog is still the funniest thing I've seen on TV.
