Steve sometimes the newer profile styluses avoid the parts of the vinyl that the old and bigger conical tips used as they didn't go so far into the groove.

Was the Please Please Me a 1N-1N press? If you do buy them take them on approval as many were played with dodgy needles in those days and may sound awful even when looking good.

Yes it's 1N-1N press.Should be able to get them on approval.

I know what you mean about looking good and sound bad my Sgt Peppers mono looks mint but sounds awful.

My copy of Please Please Me sounds wonderful Howard. My father was always careful with his styli.

I think that's the understatement of the day Steve.

Bloody marvelous is how I would describe it.

I agree Steve - I only heard "I Saw Her Standing There" but it was absolutely amazing. I really can't wait for this set.

Try What Records or Spin in Newcastle - they are independent mail order specialists. Their prices for the Beatles box is competitive with Amazon. Another possibility is Diverse Vinyl in S Wales.

On What Records it's £274.99 plus postage. But, they seem to have received all the orders they can cope with as it now down as 'Out of stock' and no longer available for preorder. I would still buy with Amazon though. You'll get it on the day of release if you have Prime and it's free and so easy if you need to return the set if there are any problems. The difference in price isn't worth the potential hassle.

Did anybody compare a new mono album with well preserved old?

When the new mono masters are released I will. They aren't available until September 8th.

Thanks for thoughts on where to buy, I guess it's a balance of convenience v supporting independents. No issue with Amazon per say but they did loose my advocacy with their tax avoidance activity.....

Having been underwhelmed with the stereo box set I'll wait until the reviews confirm the sound quality - all the signs are hopeful!

Another unpacking of the box - by Michael Fremer. More entertaining than the guy from the Beatles fan club, but what will be a lot more interesting will be Fremer's review of the SQ.

Apart from his attempted British accent.  Let's hope the SQ is as good as they look.

I agree Steve. I nearly always order from Amazon, because of the easy returns option. Tim at What Records is a nice bloke and very knowledgeable, so I order from him too sometimes.

The box is going for $336.99 at most online sites in the US, Sounds like a bargain looking at the 275 pounds being charged in the UK.

Posted on: 30 August 2014 by Steve J

As usual we get shafted price wise in the UK even with a supposedly British product. Some will be down to our 20% VAT rate but the pound/dollar exchange rate is good at the moment so I don't know where the remainder goes.

Posted on: 30 August 2014 by osprey
But the British price is still cheap compared the 459€ we have to pay here (and even if we are far away the freight should not be that much…).
Posted on: 30 August 2014 by Steve J

True, but everything seems to be more expensive where you are Osprey, especially booze.

Posted on: 30 August 2014 by osprey
You are correct Steve, and that's why people take the trouble traveling to Estonia to get it cheaper
