QNAP/HI RES DOWNLOAD QUESTION

Posted by: JohnL on 17 June 2014

Hi, I have a QNAP 212 where I rip my CD's to the multimedia folder and this shows as "NAS DRIVE TWONKY MEDIA" on my Naim NDX streamer. I am about to buy my first Hi Res downloads and am planning to save these in the "DOWNLOADS" folder. My questions are: 1) is this the right place to save these (and do I have to do anything to the folder /) and 2) How do I make this folder show on my NDX. Sorry if this is a bit simplistic but not good with modern technology.
Many thanks

John

Just save it to the multimedia folder. I don't think the downloads folder sits under twonky on qnap (you could make it do so, but anything else in there might give false results)

I download my  FLAC high res 24 to my C drive on PC and then ensure the download is lossless via dBpoweramp and then copy to Z drive for the NAS,

when you download it should ask you where to file download, that way you always have a copy of the download

I also download my files onto the c drive and then copy onto the NAS. Downloading a lot from hdtracks, I Also save a 3rd copy to an external USB drive. in 3 years had the drives in my qnap nas fail - which cost me money as was the only copy I had so when lost had to download again, then the qnap itself failed.

John I use a QNAP 412 for my ripped and downloaded music.  Your QNAP will have a folder called 'Shared' if you are looking at the Linux file structure.  The folders you create that can be seen by client machines will get created in this folder.  Unless you really know Linux don't create outside of this because you won't see it from Windows or Apple unless you use a special file browser like the one in QNAP utils.

I create a folder in the Multimedia directory called 'Music' and in this folder I created 3 directories:

music_ripped

music_downloaded

music_archive.org         Just for stuff from the archive.org site

The main reason for doing this is (a) simplicity and (b) to store playlist in the 'Music' directory, ie at the same level as the 3 directories described above.  Playlists on a upnp server are not as straightforward as you might imagine because your upnp server won't understand directories like M:\music.

Then I point my upnp server software to:

/share/Multimedia/Music - in minimstreamer

Notice how the upnp server running in a Linux environment is starting at the shared directory, /share is always created when Linux is installed so you don't need to create it.  Notice also that the separator is the forward slash (/) not the backslash (\).

With it set this way I can back up my download separately to my ripped etc.  Also my playlists are working in the same 'namespace' as all of my music - it just makes life easier and allows you to use playlist programs.

As some of the guys above say download files to a local drive (c work up the tags and then copy to your QNAP, use db3poweramp.  Downloading from sites is different because many of them have download software, which in my opinion gets in the way.  If you can download via your web browser then do it.  The downloaders will dump their files anywhere they choose, some you can specify where they go, some you can't.  Avoid if you can.  If you download to a shared directory then you are bashing your network.

Good luck.

Hi all, thanks for your help and advice. Big Bill, you have blown my mind a bit there. Are you saying don't use, for instance, Linn Download Manager ??. Also, if I save the download to say C drive or "My Music", how would I use DB Poweramp to get it into the multimedia folder on my QNAP. Sorry if this seems dumb but I really struggle with computers.

Many thanks for your help

I am not really saying don't but I am saying I don't if I can avoid it.  Funny enough I downloaded "Alive" by Hiromi last night from ProStudioMasters and on this site you have to use the downloader and I can't see where you can change where to download it to.  Now I have a system, everything goes into a certain directory on E: (a local drive) and then I tag it and finally copy it to my music directory.  But the downloader gives me an extra step and being a retired programmer where the main driver is laziness, I do not like it.

On eClassical, a site I buy a lot of stuff from, I can simply download my purchases using my HTML browser.

btw the Hiromi album is absolutely brilliant, she is a tiny, doll-like Japanese girl who is one of the most amazing Jazz pianists I have ever heard and I mean EVER!  She has got an incredible trio together, Hiromi: PIano, Anthony Jackson: 6 string base guitar and Simon Phillips: Drums.  The last two are about as good as a Rhythm section gets, check them out on Wiki to see their credits.

A brilliant album!  Also look out for another Jazz trio called 'Roller Trio'.  It just makes you realise that Jazz will never die because it keeps inspiring such brilliant young people.

Sorry I sidetracked myself.  If you are happy with the Linn Downloaded manager then ignore flatulent old farts like me and carry on using it.  But you can simply copy it into the music directory on your NAS using Windows Explorer or similar on the Apple.  I assume you have mapped drives from the NAS on your PC?  btw are you Windows or Apple?

Hi Bill,

I'm a windows 7 user. If I open up the "network, NAS DRIVE" path, it shows me all the shares associated with the 212, such as multimedia, downloads etc etc. All my ripper cd's (via Db Poweramp) are in Multimedia. Bloody hell that almost sounds like I've got a clue what I am on about !! (and believe me, where computers are concerned, I haven't). Congratulations, you have got me interested in listening to Hiromi !!

Many thanks

Hi John,

It's a start mate.  QNAP/Linux set up the folders for you and that is useful.

So as I said you can simply copy to the directory.  But don't worry too much you can always change your directory structure and Twonky to do a rescan.  The directories you use are pretty irrelevant as long as you server (Twonky in your case) can see the files.  I have a box set of Martha Argeric which is in a directory called 'Argerich, Martha' and there are some tracks composed by Beethoven but I have the Harnoncourt Beethoven symphonies in a directory called 'Beethoven, Ludwig' - matters not a jot.

Good luck with it and keep posting on here.

Cheers

Hi all who replied to my original post. Been a couple of weeks but I have, using your invaluable advice, downloaded my first two hi res files (Steely Dan Gaucho from Linn and Tubular Bells from B&W) and all went amazingly well (job's a good 'un as we say in Yorkshire). Just one thing, I had a lot of trouble getting the artwork for Tubular Bells to show on N Stream, I could not get it to show until, using Tag&Rename on the NAS, I imported from Amazon even though there was a cover file in the download. Any ideas what I've been doing wrong ??. Big Bill, I am going to check out that Hiromi release, it's got a cracking review in the Hi Fi mags and Simon Phillips is one hell of a drummer. Many thanks for all your help, no doubt I'll be back the next time I'm looking at either my computer or N stream thinking "what the.........". Many thanks for your help, John
