Where has the NDX into Hugo thread gone?
Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 19 June 2014
Any ideas?
There were some heated debates, but no more so than other recent exchanges on the forum, and those threads are still there...
i can only think of negative defensive reasons which I don't associate with Naim at all.. I hope it wasn't to do with that..perhaps the thread can go back into padded cell? It was a fairly useful resource for those wanting to use their Naim equipment with a Hugo source..
My thanks to all as well.
I have a Hugo on order and have contacted Mark Grant re suitable digital cable. I will use my Flashback phono to din for now but will audition Hiline and other in due course.
Hugh
To second what HiFiman has said, yesterday I ordered this exact lead to listen to headphones using the SU as a source. What an absolute gent he is, explained I had a Hugo, and he was aware of the limited clearance, and had a suitable phono connecter in stock. Got into work 20 minutes ago, and there was the package sitting on my desk. Truly great service, and an extremely well made product.
Fantastic.
Good stuff - he does make some very high quality, well made products at sensible prices. Highly recommended.
As a result of this and the previous thread, I have purchased a Hugo - thanks to all commentators.
i am currently demoing a Chord Sarum as Hugo output cable to my 52 and would like to try a hiline, however, I would also like to try changeing the USB input cable (supplied) from the mac mini and am wondering to what extent it might effect my conclusions regarding the output cables - obviously trying to factor in, in's and outs at the same time is difficult without having all cables available at the same time.
Can anybody offer any insights or advice on which 'end' to focus on first?
Im am in exactly the same position as yourself , i have had the pleasure of auditioning the STA , hiline and a Lunar
Its pretty much "horses for courses" as each cable has its own characteristic .Although the STA for me was the best cable , at £1600 it was just not worth it over the other 2
Personally i really like the Ar Lunar and what it does , an excellent cable and for the money its an absolute steal ( i use lunar now between cds3/52 and supercap/power )
Regarding the USB , although i have not auditioned it , the Vertere Acoustics D-Fi2 Usb seems to be flavour of the month (especially on computeraudiophile)
Currently in dilemma as to purchase a Mac Mini (top spec with Amarra + external SSD) or the New Auralic Aries - which sounds really appealing
I tried the 'Hugo here, just to see whether the immense hype was justified, sadly it isn't what a poor device it is, difficult to use, neither fish nor fowl, is it meant to be portable?
Very disappointing in all respects in terms of resolution it sounded thick and I'll defined.

Oh really? ... Or should I have said... Did you really?
LOL...so we, on the other side, must be dealing with complete deafness, or we've got some "hugo correction" system implanted into our brains.

s'funny I thought everyone was entitled to their opinion, without fear of being insulted on this forum. So DHT make his opinion known and cvrle feels he has to insult the guy. So I was wrong, talk up about the latest fave rave and you will get shouted down.
Many folks whose opinion I trust have posted that the Hugo sounds really good. For someone to come along with such a negative view is rather odd and points to there being a significant problem with either that Hugo or the way it's been implemented In the system.

Indeed, or just in matching the presentation styles of different system components?
I think both the tone and brevity of the review might lead some to doubt the sincerity of the expressed opinion, just guessing. Personally I'd like to hear a little more on the person's listening habits / equipment and setup before deciding whether an opinion is worth serious consideration.

None of which I experienced on Saturday.
Then again I have not had my ears tested for some time.

None of which I experienced on Sunday either G. I was surprised at just how good, and how "analogue"-sounding this amazing little unit is...

I'm sorry, but I feel insulted with comment like that, so I don't know what I'm talking about.
Hugo is one of the finest DAC's on the market right now, and even farther. If you take price/performance ration, probably the finest!
If you can't find that value, you should make sure that you have done right test to it in first place, with right equipment and right methods.
cvrle,
I feel you should look to your original post. Whilst not directly insulting, it's tone, to a fair degree, comes across as passive aggressive. However, you may not have intended it to come across that way. Sarcasm and other such modes of speech are difficult to portray in text.
In your opinion and that of many others, the Hugo is an exceptional piece of kit. In the circumstances DHT used it he felt it didn't work that well.
He is entitled to his opinion, you are entitled to your opinion.
Unless you have specific evidence that DHT was trying to deceive (and I see nothing in his post that clearly shows that was his intent) he is entitled to the benefit of any doubt.
I'm sorry again, I did not want to insult anybody, and if I did, I do apologize, I just wanted to create little bit of fun here. That is all, but it turned the other way.
In the other hand I do feel insulted, because, the comment is not about not liking something or finding some missing features that someone would consider on that kind of device. That would would be fine, and normal, not the only one here that doesn't like it. It is about splashing a bucket of cold iced water (it is popular these days, at least in North America) to the back of very large number of people who share same kind of opinion about this shiny little box.
Er , moving on, or back, can anybody recommend or comment upon USB A/micro cables and their impact upon the Hugo. My experience to-date with output cables ( limited to Chord cobra/ signature/sarum ) has shown a wide variation in presentation from 'just about acceptable' to convincing me to buy it (the Hugo). Given the variables involved in streaming/ computer audio it does not surprise me that there are divergent views about any piece of the chain.

Lighten up man - I was a joking. I don't know if the guy was serious or not, maybe he is a troll trying to wind people up - who knows. But if he is a wind up troll then he certainly made an impact, just look at some of the posts he sparked off.

I purchased a mac mini with Audirvana+, but with a view to being able to use it for other duties if my digital music aspirations were not met. Prior to auditioning the Hugo, they had not been met!
Thanks for your comments re: cables, i am tempted to purchase the Vertere Dfi and move on.... To listening rather than auditioning , its getting rather tiresome.
From the point of USB cables, there are very few USB A to micro USB B cables out there on the market. I'm awaiting word from WireWorld about a possible limited run of their cables in this format. In the meantime I'm using a very basic Apple micro USB cable that came with an iPhone with an RCA-DIN Hiline. It sounds surprisingly good. It will be interesting to see if an Audiophile USB cable sounds better.

Jan-Erik you will upset him again and he will report you and get the whole thread wiped - AGAIN!
btw is that a good likeness do you know?

FInally! Some brave soul finally has to guts to post the truth behind the Hugo hype. The Hugo is neither a fish nor a fowl. That, friends, is not an opinion its a fact.
I would think that "guts thing" would work the other way on Naim's forum, when we talk about competition, but I'll adopt to it...LOL.
Chord have always been more abut the case than the engineering, I also read an interview with their designer Rob Wats?
I will try and post a link, his answers to some of the questions posed simply did not make sense and showed a basic lack of understanding of sample theorem, I will see if I can find a link.
