Robert Elms gave a short but very poignant tribute to the great man and his music. One of the tunes he played was Song for my father, couldn`t help noticing the bass riff copied by the Dan on Ricki  don`t lose that number.

Horace Silver was truly one of the very best jazzmen in the 50's and 60's. I have many of his recordings, and have enjoyed his quintet for many years. He had a distinctive piano style, and his music always seems to sound joyous.

I never realised he was still around. How old was he when he passed?

Great musician. RIP

He was 85 Steve. Actually his death was also (erroneously) reported a couple of years ago.

If anyone wants to see him in his prime, check out this epic 19-minute "Song for My Father" from 1968. Awesome.

Horace Silver was one of the true greats of jazz ... as pianist, bandleader, and especially as composer. There aren't many like him left. Check out this transcendent ballad Peace from his album Blowin' the Blues Away:

There's also a beautiful version played and sung by Norah Jones on the late Marian McPartland's show Piano Jazz:

RIP (though assumed he'd gone with the other greats in the last 25 years.

Great jazz pianist from the precise era in jazz I most appreciate; great style and a nice contrast to my other favourites like Bill Evans and Bud Powell.
