UPnP Streaming - alternatives - DAAP or PC/Mac Dig out?

Posted by: Tog on 06 March 2011

So Guys - Who has had a chance to try the digital alternatives to UPnP? On paper, well implemented UPnP should be better... but is it?

I'm experimenting at the moment to find out if I can hear the difference between flac
streamed to Naim or aiff streamed DAAP or direct via Mac dig out.

So what do you think - is UPnP the way to go?

Tog how is your experiment?

I am experimenting transcode to wav versus flac

Not IMHO - I'm very happy with the Sonus or Airplay for streaming and direct connection using the MF Vlink otherwise. I've only had problems with UPnP and cannot get it run reliably on Mac the Music Server (Dual PPC G5, 2.5 GB RAM and 2 TB dedicated disk for iTunes). I've been thinking if god had meant me to use UPnP then why did he give me Airplay. That said if I had a NAS that supported UPnP and my NaimUniti understood AIFF then I'd give it go. However, as I haven't then I'm content with the method that works for me.

AIFF and WAV are identical if you disregard the IP preamble. I think you can get equally good results with all these different technologies and CODECs: I don't believe any one method is better than the other. However, I do firmly believe AIFF, ALAC, FLAC and WAV sound better than AAC, MP3 and WMA.

All the best, Guy

Having my cake and eating it  - dig out from Mac is good and it is really nice to have a decent control point in Remote. I can stream or play direct and control either from iPad/iPhone. The TogServe is staying as I can also stream effortlessly to the Mac and control it via Remote as well.

So TogServe will move soon it it's new server and I will keep a duplicate library in flac. I will either use a MacMini Server or a MBP attached to the Uniti and consider either an nDac or M2Tech Young.

In the meantime I await the updated n-stream app, new mac based UPnP servers, new vortexbox updates and the development of airplay.

If UPnP gets better who knows ....

Ideally, something with the iTunes management/organization ease that sound good would be lovely.

Nas can transcode anything into Wave, so aiff or alac are no big deal......

Just the need to update tag and organize them manually seems to be most troublesome of all.

No such thing as AIFF streamed via DAAP–if you stream via AirPort Express, this gets converted to Apple Lossless for transmission–not necessarily bit perfect as the transcoding is done by Core Audio under OS X, subject to the Core Audio kernel mixer.

Mac digital out on current products only supports 44.1 / 48 / 96 kHz sample rates, ruling out 88.2 / 176.4 kHz / 192 kHz....

Sorry David - aiff is transcoded to alac and streamed - VB transcodes flac to wav via DAAP - don't think the maximum sample rates really hinder most people as yet since most material is still at Redbook and relies on upsampling DACs - not perfect but then neither is DLNA/UPnP.
