Hi-Res Tommy

Posted by: GerryMcg on 13 March 2011

Recently downloaded the 24/96 version of The Who's Tommy, an all time favourite.

Well the sound quality is simply astonishing and I did not need to compare with the CD before posting in the Streaming Audio area.

Every aspect of the sound is significantly better than I have heard before on Vinyl or CD. It even better than the Band On The Run album I downloaded a few weeks back.

I have just now compared with the CD via CDS3/555PS absolutely blown out of the water by the Unitiserve playback of Hi-Res.

It's a long time ago in the upgrade path where I did not need to do an a/b comparison.

Hi,

Interesting - I have recently added a UnitiServe and DAC, but have not tried playing any high resolution files yet.

I'm curious - where did you download the files, and have you heard the MFSL gold CD edition, which I think sounds great ?  Now that would be a great A/B comparison...

Thanks

It's from HDtracks and cost £12.74. No I have not heard the MSFL gold edition, but this is the most significant SQ improvement I have encountered in HiFi for 30 years. I have enjoyed some good improvements over the past 5 years 250 to 300, 52 to 252 to 552,HiCap to SC etc. Nothing on this scale. I am not sure whether all HiRes transfers would give such improvement but I can live in hope.

I have never subscribed fully to the source first philosophy - I was wrong.

You are obviously impressed with MFSL and given the lack of available Hi-Res recordings I would be interested in  these and will look further into their catalogue.

I just purchased the download from HDtracks. It downloaded the pdf file and the first track and now I just keep getting a message saying that the server is unable to download. Both my browser and email client are working fine.

This is my first experience of HDtracks. It looks like it will be my last!

I had a problem downloading at first, my downloads kept freezing. However when I changed the target drive from my NAS to the internal PC hard drive it downloaded without any trouble.

I always download to the internal hard drive of my desktop PC and then copy files to the laptop that drives my digital system

Cookiemonster ... This looks like a problem with HDtracks' server to me. I checked out everything last night but couldn't solve the problem.

Alfa, Victor, Alfa, Xray may provide the answer!!!
