Nap 100 yes/no??

Posted by: pedromarmot on 06 July 2014

I need advice regarding the posible purchase of the Nap 100. Im running my Unitiqute 2 with kef r100 or guru juniors. Im pretty happy with the setup, but I feel a litle disapoint regarding low level sound, I really need to push the qute beyond 40 level to get really music. I read diferent opinions regarding nap 100, somes good other like a very recent one, not that good. For what I read its a better update to qute 2 them for first versión... maybe my problem its speaker cables? I use atlas hyper 3.0 with 3 meters long.

I dont have the chance to try the nap before I buy, what to do? what you think?

Thank you very much

I would get the Naim speaker cables first. Let them burn in for a few weeks and review whether you need more power. If you do then still want to try a 100, buy it used and then you can sell with little or no loss if you don't like it. Think of it as an extended home demonstration.

I sold my NAP100 as I did most of my listening through it (and Qute2) at low levels, where the sound was quite delicious and delicate. The NAP was a small upgrade in sound and the Qute2 was a very capable performer 'bare' so i'm not sure the NAP will help at all with low-level listening enjoyment. I would consider a NAP100 again as the Qute is currently on film and occasional listening duty in the living room in a new house which requires louder settings than before. Also the temperature in the house reached high 30s midweek! I use Linn K4 cable which is a variant of good old NACA4. I don't think changing the cable will change the sound much, unless there was a problem with connectors or dry joint(?)

In essence if you can't demo the item and you can't afford to lose money on a quick turnover, keep "your powder dry".

try (worked for  Celestion 600si)

setup ~> speakers (large) ~> loudness = yes

I found the Qute sound alone was a bit thin ( for a lack of a better word) The NAP 100 helped the R100s quite a bit with the low end but the highs are about the same. I find that most of the time I have the Qute volume level at about 33,  45 is the loudest I ever need to go, and it's loud. In the evenings when I turn it down to about 26-27 it's still good but not great. Anything below 25 and it's hard to pick out certain sounds. Obviously your mileage may vary, I have my system setup in a 4x6m room.

I would say the NAP100 was a good upgrade for my Qute(1) and the KEF R100s, especially that I managed to get a very good deal on a demo sample.

For hearing alot of the music it is quite normal you have to push the Qute.

The R100's sensitivity is only 86dB. Also because of the small cabinet and driver it already rolls off at 56Hz. At higher volume it will sound great, but don't expect miracles at lower volumes.

DomTomLondon  what speaker cables did you use? I read diferent opinions about atlas hyper been restrictive with low volumes...

I have a pair of chord carnival silver screen cables that use with the Qute/Nap100 and the KefR100s.

for a while I also used QED genesis silver spiral, which I had from a previous system. But even though they were a bit smoother and more laid-back they were for bi-amping and quite thick and difficult to hide behind furniture. Which is sometimes a compromise when you share the living room  with a partner and have two kids ;-)

pedromarmot,

It's very difficult to have the same configuration other person has, but I do have a  similar one.

I'm new to naim. I started like one year ago with a UQ, which I still have, and among others I do have Q300s.

Now I use a lot more a V1-DAC, 202 and 200.

I can do some testing if you like and give my point of view.

Regards.
