Unitiserve 1TB Questions

Posted by: hafler3o on 14 July 2014

Hi, I am thinking of getting an ex-demo Unitiserve (as I only have a NAS atm and no real backup other than the CDs themselves, downloads have been backed up on other PCs)

This particular unit is a 1TB version. I saw a thread that stated downloads cannot be added stored onto the device, can someone confirm this please? I've looked at the Product manuals but none of them talk about drive capacity and none state which software release version a particular model can be raised to. So I'm completely nonplussed by which manual I should refer to when trying to work out what the Unitiserve is capable of. Plus I can't be sure about whether the device is as 'up to date' as it could be.

So in essence, what manual should I be reading and what firmware version should I be expecting? I would have thought Naim could make things a little (lot) easier to ascertain than this!

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The 1TB doesn't allow downloads onto the HDD. The latest firmware is v 1.7a.

I hadn't realized that there are five versions of the manual... an email to Naim support (specifying the serial no. of the Serve) should get you what you need.

Thanks for the replies. Yes Jan I'm aware of the latest release but have no idea if it is valid for a 1TB unit. HH I shall send you an email later tonight (I am an hour ahead so might fall asleep before you!)

The unit is currently in a Parisian shop and despite asking on the phone the Ser. No. was not forthcoming, I suspect they think divulging such information might precipitate further price negotiations.

Bonne soiree.

My understanding on the 1TB you can have multiple libraries - the CD rip store locally and HD on the NAS. Another option is to attach a (self-powered) USB drive which reportedly gives very musical results.

Yes, as Jan-Erik has said, the 1tb version does not allow you to store your downloads on the US HD.
That was introduced when the 2tb version came in.
I have my downloads on my NAS as I have the 1tb version.
Would prefer them on my US, but c'est la vie as they say in your parts Hafler!

Good to hear you have a 1TB and it is still serving you well, touch wood.

I prefer "tant pis", pronounced 'tanty pissy' if you don't want the French to understand you

I've read through the migration instructions and there's nothing that indicates that 1.7a would not work on a 1 TB unit. The only requirement is that the unit has the 1.6g updater firmware, which you can install if not present.

1.7 works on 1 tb units. Actually 1.7 works on my friends hdx with 2  500 gb disks.

The only thing that does not  work  unless you have a 2 tb server is the internal downloads folder.

Yes, still going strong (hope I havent just jinxed it!), very reliable up to now.

And I learnt something new too - thanks for improving my French vocabulary and pronunciation

Just to add - downloaded music on the 1tb US has to be stored either on a NAS, or alternatively it has USB ports on the back which can be used for flash drives. I've got a couple of 128gb flash drives which is sufficient for my needs. I don't think that you can plug in a USB hard disk for this purpose,MIT has to flash drives, no idea why.

i have had one of the early 1tb models for nearly 4 years now and it's been bullet proof.
