My Naim is using the internet when I'm not there. What's it doing?

Posted by: Glenn Tayler on 16 July 2014

I have an NDX streamer and a Qnap drive that are attached to each other by yer basic BT broadband. I have been away from home for a couple of days and via BT I have discovered that I have used about 250mb a day broadband. Nothing is switched on except BT router, NDX and Qnap drive. It isn't playing or updating (to my knowledge) and there is absolutely nothing else switched on. The only reason The Hi-fi is left on, is to protect it's delicate circuitry from power surges when I switch it on.

But it seems my system is using a GB broadband a week!

Who is it talking to? What is it doing? Is it conspiring with other machines to take over?

Seriously, can my Hi-fi be using the internet when I'm not using it? And why so much?

I spoke too soon.  That setting change didn't 'stick,' and the nas is back awake.  Chesky can you tell me how you changed which setting?

Bart – indeed I am referring to the DTC (v4.0.14.1175): Tools->Music Repositories->Scannable Network Shares will guide you to the list of your shares. Each share has a scan type setting which can be modified to ‘manual’ (default is automatic and scheduled is another option). This setting controls the scanning behavior of the HDX and the setting ‘manual’ suppresses regular scans but requires of course a manual scan when new music is added. I do not have any proof if that does the trick as my ‘Server-Share’ (HDX-SSD!) does require a permanent connection anyway. Hope it helps!

I would just say that a nas, much like a server is sorta designed out of the box to be on all the time. Fighting to get it to sleep regardless of what the software offers may be futile.

Depends on the configuration - but as a matter of fact my QNAP NAS goes into sleep mode when I turn my HDX off. I am pretty sure the HDX is preventing the NAS from going into sleep mode due to monitoring activities on share(s).

I guess if the nas is used purely for the hdx you may have better luck. My nases have multiple uses with devices all over the house poking them.

not sure if its accurate but apparently the time of most stress for harddrives is spinning them up, so perhaps constant on off state of sleep mode may cost you in the long run?

I agree to that. This is why I leave my HDX-SSD always on except for the usual reasons to switch off (holidays, thunder storms&hellip. Constant operation is probably beneficial to all computer items.

wow - just realized that three dots followed by a right parenthesis creates a graemlin aka smile.
