naim uniti and zoneripper/nas

Posted by: hoddle22 on 21 July 2014

I am currently using a uniti with a zoneripper 2tb mirrored.

I am having problems with the zoneripper and therefore thinking of replacing it with a NAS drive. Can I purchase any make/model NAS drive that will work ok with my uniti?

I'm assuming that I will need something like DBarchive for ripping?

My wife would prefer the simpler option of a new zoneripper but at a £1k plus I'm sure I can get the same results with a NAS.

Just one final question \i'm also assuming that I will be able to drag and drop the current music files into the NAS.

I use a QNAP HS 210 for NAS which has x 2 TB mirrored,  use very good programme to rip dBpoweramp which is around £30 cost of the QNAP was around £450 - use UPnP via Twonky

map the QNAP on computer via Z drive - should be able to copy current files from computer to NAS - dBpoweramp also converts files - I use FLAC for my NDX

It's worth noting that there are more issues with Twonky than anything else. I'd suggest that you avoid it. I believe you can use other media servers on QNAP nases, otherwise Synology are very good. That's what I use, but only as backup for my UnitiServe.

Rod,

Can you be a bit more specific with the problems encountered with the ZR? I have one myself, not perfect by any means but apart from one HDD failure replaced out of warranty it's been pretty reliable acting as a server and ripper.

The new current form factor look a step forward to me, but might be worth seeking support from your dealer/supplier first before replacing with something else.

Felty99,

The ZR;

extremely noisy in standby (disk drives always seem to be doing something) and operation. (is located in hifi rack in lounge)

freezes when playing.

Most mornings notice that the cd drawer is open as though it's just been powered on.

anthony D,

Would it be easy to transfer existing music from Zoneripper to NAS, drop and drag?

don't know Zonneripper that well, can you see the files on your PC? - once you have the NAS the transfer should be easy - I use windows 7 so files a both on the Z drive and QNAP

rather than having to rip the CD's - or copy the files on to hard drive and then transfer to NAS - assume you are going to keep the current format you are happy with ALAC or FLAC

that's my understanding = but I am sure the forum will offer solution

Can you login to WHS via Remote Desktop either through a PC, laptop or tablet? It sounds like there could be a problem with the OS or the music server software (Asset). Bringing up the Windows Home Server Console should identify any failing HDDs or network issues.

Next step would be to restart Asset by clicking on Settings within WHS console.

Synolgy NAS DS214se + 2x 3TB Western digital NAS drive.

Costed me about 400 euro. Easy to install and after 2 months it still runs without having to restart it.

Also, with the 'DS-audio' app you can stream the music.

Not the same as the n-stream app though.

I'm using this cause I refuse to spent soo much money on a apple-device.

So can't wait for the new app coming around september on Android as well.
