Unitiserve 2TB failure…I think
Posted by: Yeast on 23 July 2014
I have a 1.5 year old Unitiserve that has been rock solid. Last Night we had a power failure and my Unitiserve (Connected via Ethernet cable to my network) remains flashing and I cannot see the serve over the net work. The unit turns on and off okay, but the front panel remains flashing. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? My unitiqute works fine but does not recognize the US. Help!
you might need to reset the router, it looks as if you Unti serve has lost the IP address of the router - had same issue with my NDX - I would try resetting all - turn off Unti serve, NAS and then re set router - when it resets turn on NAS and then Uniti serve
it should then pick up IP address again (hopefully)
Yeast,
Based on my experience with my previous UnitiServe, it sounds like the boot sector was corrupted by the power outage.
Shut the unit down and leave it off for a few minutes. Restart. If the logo remains flashing, this probably indicates that it has lost the boot sector. A trip to the dealer is then required.

Thanks, I think unfortunately, you are correct that it is not network related. I had it connected through a power conditioner and all my other digital gear is perfect including my Unitiqute. So, about the boot sector issue…do I assume this means my hard drive is gone and all data (Music gone)? I tried the resets of the network with no solution to the issue, just the flashing face plate.
No, your music should still be there ; it's just that the unit can't boot until it's reset by the dealer.
As an aside I wonder if the SSD version is immune to this problem?
Harddrives and power failures a rarely a good thing this goes for ssds as well.
In my experience ssds:
a. fail as much as normal spinners
b. when it fails it fails spectacularly. i.e. a spinner will slowly go wonky an ssd will simply stop working, dead, zip, nada.
It could also be your power supply has gone?
Although I have the 1TB version and I had the original power supply it was issued with, when my power supply went I had the flashing logo syndrome.
Spoke to my dealer who in turn spoke to Naim.
New power supply fixed the problem.
Hope you get it fixed soon.

Yes, I had an SSD fail spectacularly on my Mac Pro recently.
As to the op, I've had similar issues with my Vortexbox; it took logging in and writing some linux in order to resolve the broken boot sectors. Of course with the US you don't have that luxury, but could be a similar problem, or a power supply as the previous poster stated. And no, you won't lose your data, but you did have it all backed up anyway, didn't you?
By the way, does the disc that came with the unitiserve have a restore feature on it?

The only disc that came with my uServe was the internal hard disc.
Sorry to hear of your struggle!
I'm pretty sure the power supply is okay, otherwise how would the flashing front panel get power? I swapped in a Teddy Pardo power supply which is made for the Unitiserve and it too powers up, but no network device is present with this power supply also.
When I turn it on, the CD mechanism makes the start up sound, I just don't get a device reading when the iPhone and iPad apps look for a device.
Boot sector failure sounds scary to me because there are so few Naim service centers in the US since the Distribution change here. If it is boot sector issues, I have all MAC stuff and the Unitiserve is Windows based I think.
Well All, its off to Audio Plus Services for the fix. The new distribution already taking hold. I have AV Options right here in town, yet I have to send it off to New York to Audio Plus Services (and then Canada and back) for who knows how long. Oh well, on the positive side its under warranty.
My front panel light was flashing despite the fact that the power supply had a fault.
Looks like you've cross checked that though with the other supply you have.
Im sure it will be fixed quickly Yeast, fingers crossed you aren't without it for too long.
Power supplies in computers can very easily half fail. This usually materialises as the harddrive being unable to spin up. 2tb platters are heavy too so if the supply is failing, the drive not able to spin might be down to power as opposed to a failed drive.
