Accessing MQ folder on ReadyNAS backup
Posted by: mcsucker on 25 July 2014
While my UnitiServe is in for repair(!!) I tried to stream from the NAS. I can play downloads which have been copied to the Media folder but contents of the MQ folder cannot be seen by N-Stream.
System is UnitiServe, NDX+XPS. The US was set up by the dealer to back up overnight
I am a network user not an expert! any thoughts as to how I can use the ripped backups?
A secondary issue is that the N-Stream app shows multiple copies of some tracks
It's likely that your files are in WAV - I was told by someone that if I stored the backup in WAV and the US conked out, that the WAV files on the backup would be unplayable by the Naim streamer. Because of that I converted all the files to FLAC, and set the US to transcode to WAV for playback. The FLAC files on the backup should then be playable directly.
If I am right (and usually I'm not) your best bet is to wait for the return of the US and then do a bulk convert to FLAC via the DTC - a process that will take some days. Once completely converted, do a differential backup and the WAVs will be removed on the NAS and be replaced by nice compact FLACs.
If you tell folks which NAS and which streaming program it runs, someone may be able to walk you through it if you need help.

As Alan wrote . . . I suspect that the MQ folder is not being seen as a Share.
Hopefully if you can set the directory to be visible you will be able to browse the folder structure and play the music Using nStream.
My Readynas allows this. I have the 104 and 102 models.
Doing it this way should work even with WAV files as you won't have tags in the files that the UPNP server can use. Not as elegant but at least you should have music.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo v2 and no idea how to see which folders are visible to N-stream. So if anyone could walk me thro' on how to do it I would be v grateful
Hi
To make you files visible to nstream you will need to go into the setup/configuration menu of your readynas. Access the SHARE option and create a new share. Give this share a name which contains the word music. This is required to enable the nstream to access it. You could then copy your music files from the US backup folder on your NAS. (Cut and paste) is an easy way to do this if you are using windows. However I cannot vouch for NDX being able to play these backup wav files, there would however be nothing lost in trying it. Just copy a few files to establish feasibillity of this method.
You will also need to make sure that the streaming service the readynas uses is activated This can be done in the readynas setup menu.
hope this helps

One thing to get clear in your mind is that nStream sees and talks to the media streamer running on your ReadyNAS, so if your ReadyNAS shows up as an option when you choose upnp on your naim player, you're half way there. That ReadyNAS streamer in turn knows which folders you've told it to look at...so the job is to configure the folders for the media streamer application on the ReadyNAS. When that's done, nStream gets it for free.
I don't have a ReadyNAS, but I think it can run Twonky (but maybe there is a ReadyStreamer or equivalent instead) as the media streamer. If you can use the ReadyNAS web interface for setup, you may see options there to specify what types of media (generally music, photos, video - so uncheck the ones you don't want, which will save time scanning) and, sometimes but not always, the path to the target directories. It appears as if there is a "streaming services" menu on your NAS home page, so look in there and edit the path to point at the directory where your WAV files are stored.
I have an older IOmega that runs Twonky, and the only options in the IOmega web interface are for media server on/off, and media type. If yours is like this, then you can use your web browser to go to the port where the Twonky server has its own web interface...and you should have much more information and options. If it's Twonky, the port is often 5000, so tou would browse to http://192.168.x.y:5000 (put in the IP address of your ready nas for the x and y). If it's some other server, you may need to poke around the web or await Richard's experienced reply!
Best wishes, this will work out fine in the interim...and when you get your server back you can do the WAV to FLAC conversion (thus getting all your metadata tags for free) and copy it onto as many NAS boxes as you wish...for backup redundancy and for streamer redundancy too.

I don't believe "music" must be in the name of the share or the folder for nStream to see it...but you do need to be sure the streamer is looking where you want it to.
For example, I have one NAS with its native streaming application pointed at a directory called "FLAC Files" and that works seamlessly. If I select that server in nStream, it immediately shows the tag categories (artist, album, whatever)...there is no "music / photo / movie" list to navigate because I turned that off on the NAS... And nStream doesn't care (nor does the unitiX when navigating with the remote).
Sorry if this is a bit pedantic, just trying to be clear!

Alan is right the word music is not required in the share name. Sorry my mistake it is needed for Unitiserve to find shares not nstream. Regarding the streaming service on your NAS does it have ReadyDLNA listed. If so activate it,you will find that nstream will work with this server. It is not the best but it may serve your purpose at least for a trial.

I've used nStream for a few years now and do not believe that "music" need be in the name of the shared folder.
music's answer works! Finally remembered my ReadyNas admin password, activated ReadyDLNA, re-scanned and backed up ripped files available to stream.
Music at last. Hopefully UnitiServe to be home again before the Naim holiday
Thanks everyone for suggestions etc
