n-Vi display problem
Posted by: GreenAlex on 18 March 2011
Something not recommende because of sound quality, but still, it should not be a technical issue if the n-Vi is powered up and down every 3-4 days.
But now the display seems to have some kind of problem.
The top lines (where the Volume is displayed) is damaged.
It seems like a few lines are dead.
It's hard to tell from the snap shot, but actually the very first line seems to still be partially alive and then 2-3 lines seem dead (where the "T" is crossed).
My question now:
- is this a common problem (have been hearing a lot about buggy displays)
- is there a fix that does not require replacing the display? i.e. resetting, unplugging and reattaching or somehow short cuircuiting and thereby resetting the display itself?
The display on our n-Vi started to disappear at the top and then spread down and our dealer said a number had this fault and sent it back to Naim.
We've had lots of problems with the machine (often posted these in the past) but after the last return they are annoying but surmountable! (As below sometimes it is reluctant to power up but does after a few tries.)
It's a wonderful machine when its behaving!
Best wishes

Yes, it is a known problem, contact Naim or your dealer.
Is it a general display problem or was only a certain batch of displays affected by this?
It will get worst...
Replacement displays are ok.
Well, then I'll wait for the current one to die on me and have it replaced afterwards.
No, It's the later displays that are the problem.
I have two nVis ( not a boast) . The earlier (236xxx 3/07) version is faultless.
The later (3/08 256xxx) has the same degrading LED display issue and since replacement of the display has been a continual P in the A. Its just been despatched back to Naim for some serious diagnosis and rectification.
In addition the first 1-3seconds of every newly inserted disc are lost and jumping tracks on MP3s is painfully slow (which I find an issue even though MP3 is probably not a feature too many use).
Oh dear! Our n-Vi has been sent back so many times we’ve lost count (probably around 5-6 times)! Sometimes it has come back with new faults. Our dealer has always been ready to collect, deliver and set up and lend us a replacement and NAIM have kept working at it, all without charge of course. Since a last major check up it only has (as I said earlier) surmountable faults, mostly to do with CD performance – eg refusing to start with anything but track 1 (I have to turn it off to break into it), not responding to the track number but moving forward with the NEXT button, returning to track 2 when it gets to the end of a CD!
So my advice would be, GreenAlex, to avoid getting stressed about it (as I have at times!), to send it back with a full account of faults and not to expect perfection if it will, without too much trouble, do want you want it to. We have had hours of pleasure from ours and find the DVD performance especially gorgeous. (But don’t use MP3.)
We cannot get a hiss free FM signal even after having a new aerial to start with then later a replacement directional one. Can anyone suggest why?
Best wishes

Sent my N-vi back to naim last week for repair to the display, hope it works ok when it comes back ?, to be honest this N-vi my 3rd has been better than the first two, i leave it on stand-by all the time never switch it off unless i need to do a re-set, the only other thing i have noticed is the missing at the start when playing a cd, will post on here how it performs when i get it back.
My primary system isn't much better though (dvd5/av2/200/v175) as far as the source is concerned. The dvd5 has been back at Naim's 5-6 times and is on it's 3rd or 4th drive and the when it first arrived had to go straight back and have the entire insides replaced :-D
So, as it's my second system and I have no warranty left, I won't stress until it actually brakes down. Until then I will simply enjoy the occasional music I listen to on it
more lines starting to fade and some more have started to die.
i'm curious if a dead display will result in a cure of the standby/wake-up problem.
anyone ever tried disconnecting the display to check if it cures the problem?
GreenAlex, have never had the standby/wakeup problem with my N-vi just the display problem, so can't see it making a differance to your problem ? mind you could be wrong knowing all the problems N-vi's can throw at you,
The display has reached a point which can only be described as dead.
Maybe 5-10% brightness left and only about a third of it showing anything at all.
So no more volume, no more setup no more nothing.
I don't really need it at the moment, but am I risking damaging the rest of the electronis if I leave it in?
Of course no n-Vi has any warranty left given how long it has been discontinued, so neither has mine. So unless I am damaging something I could live with it until I have enough time and cash to have it repaired.
But I fear, that me switching it off at the back everytime might be too much for the display to take, even though I put it into standby first.
But I have no choice because of the standby bug.
GreenAlex my N-vi which had the display replaced a short time ago was still under waranty for the parts so i only paid labour and carriage costs N-vis came with 5 years parts waranty
John,
I pre-ordered mine around the same time as you when it came out, but got mine a couple of weeks before you.
If i still had it the five year warranty would of run out last month.

Gale 401 My first N-vi was over five years old, but the one i am using was the second replacement so as far as i am concerned this one is only just over three years old, so to me should still be covered under warranty which it was.
What about the damages to the system due to a defective display?
I fail to see how a faulty display will damage your system.
All it will do is make it harder for you to read/see.
You can still read the info off your main screen so you can still use it.
I would get it fixed by Naim at some point though.

I was just thinking that a damaged display might cause interferences and either decrease sound quality or if it starts to pull current inconsistently it might damage the circuitry or power supply.
Hard to say with a device like that
GreenAlex
mine came to £195 which was for labour and post and packing, my dealer sent it back for me, parts were covered under warranty
So I now just need to wait for a reply from the distributor on the labour-costs.
£195 is quite a lot. That's almost 1/4 of it's current value :-(
Mine was £195 too. Display plus a couple of other fixes done and firmware updates. Much more reliable since then (including near instant locking to my TV) although it does have a new 'feature' since it returned which requires a power off about once a week

I'm torn now. haven't gotten the quote yet but £195 buys you a 32" flatscreen :-D
Thanks guys for the heads up on cost - not to happy about it I must confess, but I have returned the unit to my dealer. I have been been told it will take two to three weeks, so no music and the standard dreadful sound from the TV until the Nvi is returned
