Browsing Music store with NDX
Posted by: AMA on 24 March 2011
Given access to NAS music collection through the Network Share on NDX -- can I browse the native folder structure and start playing the tracks by point&click?
If yes -- what software can do this?

The paid for version of Asset UPnP has folder structure browsing capability if you set it up (it isn't active by default)...
The UPnP functionality set is very much determined by the UPnP server rather than the player/client...

Phil, thanks for reply.
I still want to clarify the point.
Given I'm running Asset UPnP on my NAS drive.
1. Can I use navigation buttons on NDX front panel to browse the NAS file structure and select tracks for playback?
2. Can I use nStream/iPhone to browse the NAS file structure and select tracks for playback?

You can if you enable the functionality (I believe it's called "File and folder view") as an option in Asset UPnPs configuration...
A UPnP *CLIENT* (which is what the NDX / Uniti / UnitiQute is) is fed every menu after selecting the required UPnP server on the fly by the UPnP server itself so the options and functionality available are *TOTALLY* down to the UPnP server software.

AMA,
I wanted to jump in before Phil has a chance to reply, because I am running NDX at the moment.
1) Yes, on front panel of NDX, you can select any of the server software installed on the network, and navigate according to the options they provide, and select tracks for playback.
2) I don't have nStream/iPhone, my guess could be wrong.

AMA/aysil,
I think what Phil is saying and I is also my understanding, is that the ability to browse the folder structure rather then navigate through the Artists or Alnums or Genre is a feature that is dependent on your UPnP server and not defined by the NDX. I believe every navigation feature that is available on the NDX is also available on n-Stream. In fact as you navigate on the n-Stream the NDX screen shows the changes you are making as if you were uisng a remote control.
I hope the clarifies.

Thanks all for reply but I still has a mess in my head.
Does it mean that nStream has nothing to do with NDX ?
Is it just a Naim-developed software to capture UPnP services (available on a given network) and translate them into a GUI on iPad/iPhone?
Similar to Linn-developed Kinsky desktop?
BTW I installed Kinsky on my laptop when demoing KDS and it does allow browsing the native file structure. But -- !!! -- I didn't find the way to point & click to start playing selected track. You have to drag the track into a playlist window and then activate it. Very strange and uncomfortable.
With my Logitech Transporter I just browse the file structure (with remote & display or with a desktop application) and then start any track or album playback. Just that easy.

Yes, exactly. To be more specific, on the front panel, first you chose Asset as your server, and then under Advanced Search Options, you select Folders and Filename Browsing.

AMA,
U r just a victim of bad server software.
On my nas, by folder is right there from the beginning.
Nstream is just a fancy remote control.
What you can do on the remote, you can do it on nstream, except only for the setup options.
So if you browse by folder on remote, nstream update it's display to be the same as the little green screen. If you then touch the nstream to select a folder, the little green screen will also display items in the folder. They are just the same thing.
So you need to setup your upnp server to allow for a by folder view. Everything is guided by the server, not your ndx.

Thanks all -- I think I got it.
I hope my local dealer will get NDX on demo -- so I can put my hands on it.
