NDS newbie.

Posted by: dave marshall on 29 July 2014

Hi,

I'm picking up an NDS next week, which will be replacing my existing HDX / nDAC.

I need to decide what  software to use for ripping ripping duties, previously taken care of by the HDX.

Whatever I decide upon, has to take into account some 500 albums already ripped in WAV by the HDX to my NAS drive, and also the fact that I'm on a mac.

dBPoweramp seems popular here on the forum, can I assume it handles both ripping and replay?

Any advice to get me started would be most welcome, together with any suggestions as to superior ripping software.

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Stefan,

Fair point Stefan, but I think the secret is to try and move to new gear at a reasonable price, and the seller's price for the newly purchased NDS was impossible to turn down, which has taken much of the sting out of keeping the HDX

Anyway, the fun never stops!

Regards,

Dave.

Hi Guys,

Well, 24 hrs. in, and the music has never sounded better!

However, though the setting up was largely trouble free, there seems to be an issue with n-Stream, in that it has dropped several albums, though they are still present in n-Serve.

Similarly, odd tracks are missing, generally the last couple on some albums, though, once again, they still appear on n-Serve.

Help!

Regards,

Dave.

I sometimes find nServe to be a bit fussy, but nStream always sees everything nServe does.

Try clearing the UPNP cache in nStream.

Hi Keith,

Tried your suggestion, but to no avail, still missing some albums.

Have to say, I find the interface on n-Serve more user friendly.

Is there any way round n-Stream's insistence on breaking down "artist" into several alphabetically arranged groups, rather than simply scrolling through from A to Z?

Also, there doesn't seem to be an "album" category, as with n-Serve.

Looking on the bright side though, I'm getting to know n-Stream quite quickly, in my search for the missing music  !

Otherwise any other suggestions for recapturing missing albums would be gratefully received.

Regards,

Dave.

Hi,

Don't know if it's significant, (or how to correct it), but I've just done an "artist" count across both n-Serve and n-Stream, and it seems I'm missing only "ZZ Top"...........maybe try renaming them "Top, ZZ"!

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Dave.

Scroll up . . . the very first item when you view All Music should be "Albums."

If 'albums' really isn't there, go into the desktop client and enable that option. nStream can only see what the server allows it to see.

Sometimes nStream seems to have a funny five minutes, not showing albums you've just loaded and so on. First try killing the app by swiping it off the screen, and then restating. If that fails, delete it nd reload from the app store. Nine times out of 10, the problem will then be resolved.

It takes a little while to get on top of all this, but once it's working it is really very effective.

Hi Bart & HH,

We're getting somewhere!

Went into the desktop client in n-Serve, and enabled "albums", removed n-Stream from the iPad, re-installed it, and in "Albums" view, the missing albums are now there .

However, in "Artist" view in n-Stream, ZZ Top stubbornly refuse to appear........a good thing too, I hear you say!

I do appreciate that it might be simply getting used to the new App., but I tend to browse using "Artist" view.

Many thanks for you help guys, any last thoughts on the Artist view glitch?

Regards,

Dave.

ZZ Top appears in n-Serve on your iPhone but not in n-Stream?  That IS odd.

I'd start by looking to see if there are any extraneous characters in the tags.  Then just re-scan, clear the cache in n-Stream once again . . . and pray.  It seems an odd glitch but my guess is that it's related to the specific metadata in the tags of that album.  Did you rip it yourself??

Do they appear in the "Album Artist" view in n-Stream? "Artist" and "Album Artist" can be different strings.

Hi Bart,

There's seven ZZ Top albums happily appearing under "Artist" on n-Serve, but not on n-Stream.

Do you mean the UPnP Cache? if so, done that, no effect, I'm afraid.

Odd indeed.

Hi Vlad,

Not sure what you mean, as on my iPad, what's displayed is either "Albums" or "Artist" under "All Music".

Quite clearly, this streaming thing is a bit much for someone such as myself, who's not exactly software literate .

The n-Stream app as UPnP client has own commands for "clear UPnP chache" and "clear image cache" in it's "setup menu" in the right lower corner under the gear icon.

When this was not enough, I recommend to quit the app completely from the multitasking / app switching view and start it new.

Depending what UPnP server you use, this has it's own functions to rescan your whole media directory (which can take quite some time, if you have a large library) and / or clear it's caches...

Hi Dave,

My initial thoughts are that your NDS was probably terminally dysfunctional and that you should send it to me for long-term evaluation. Say for 15 - 20 years?

I have a very much lower end set up than yourself but which should function in a similar way. I am by no means an expert on streaming but there are a number of very knowledgeable people on here who are.

I use a NAS to store my music and n-Stream to stream to my Uniti2. The music is stored on the NAS in a traditional folders & files way. Can you browse the contents of your server to see if there is anything different about how the ZZ Top files & folders are stored?

When I use n-Stream, I can pick my NAS as UPnP server (Synology NAS's have this built-in). After selecting my NAS, I then get displayed the folders on my NAS which have been set up to share when I set up the NAS.

After selecting the music folder, I then get a stack of search options (displayed with folder icons). So, for example, I can search by Folder, Artist, Genre, Album, Album Artist, Recently Added etc. With the exception of Folder, these are tags embedded in the files themselves (FLAC, in my case) by the ripper to allow just this type of search.

I have had the occasional glitch where the ripper (I use dBpoweramp on a PC) has been fed inaccurate data from its search engines as it tries to populate the tag fields or some other error has occurred.

On one occasion, it read a CSNY CD and returned the album artist field as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young but populated the artist field as CSNY.  So if had searched by artist for something starting with Crosby, I wouldn't have found it. I've also experienced other tagging errors but luckily they are usually easily corrected.

I just wondered if your files were mis-tagged in a similar way.

Good luck,

Vlad

As Bart says, it's most odd.

i suggest you just use albums to find the ZZ top.

if you go into the albums view, you'll see them all, stating at A. Now, flick the screen down and you'll see a white search bar. Type in ZZ and the seven albums should appear. This ability to search is very powerful, but it's not at all obvious that it actually exists.

I have loads of ECM albums, so I've created a ECM genre, rather than having them scattered all over jazz, international and all sorts. So, to find, say, Keith Jarrett, I'll often go into ECM, flick the screen down and type in Keith, and up they pop. I could of course find them via Artist (all my albums work ok on this) but the way I suggest will work for you. Hopefully!

I don't think Vlad's suggestions apply here as you are struggling with WAV files ripped by the HDX and servered from the HDX to a Naim streamer. If this is not right (ie the missing files were not ripped using the HDX) it might make a difference but if nServe is ok then so should nStream be.

I suggest you ring Steve at Naim.

Hi Vlad,

Nice try mate!

Seriously though, I'm thinking that since I've narrowed down the problem with some of the good advice so far, and it affects only one artist, whom I can still access via "albums", then life is too short, (particularly at my age!), and I can live with this...................the music has never sounded better.

Aw ra best,

Dave.

Hi HH and KRM,

Yes it seems a bit odd, and I'll probably get in touch with Steve once the Naim annual holiday break is over.

He's proved invaluable in the past, particularly when it came to sorting out issues between my then newly acquired HDX, and my NAS, which appeared to have a mind of it's own.

In the meantime, since the issue affects only one artist, I think I can live with that, as I'd rather be listening to the music than scratching my head trying to figure things out...............does this make me a bad person  ?

Thanks so much for all your thoughts and advice on this though,

The fun just never stops, does it!

Aw ra best,

Dave.

Hi Justin,

Yep, the NDS / HDX combination is simply stunning  .
