Network issue - help please

Posted by: Steve Crouch on 02 August 2014

I cannot access my music via Unitiserve SSD located on Netgear NAS and also unable to burn CD's.  I've re-booted etc to no avail.  My NDS can read the music from the NAS.

I've spoken to Naim and they logged into my network and said it was a network issue But couldn't identify what the problem might be.  I have taken my NAS, U/serve and switch to a friends and all works fine and can burn CD's etc

i have a Sky router and BT openreach box so assume it has to be something to do with these?  I'd be grateful for help!

Steve,

It could be a setting on your modem.  On the other hand, if everything works OK on a friend's network, it could be that your modem is faulty.  I have had a home network for nearly 20 years, and help friends troubleshoot theirs.  In that time I have replaced about five modems or routers that stop working correctly; one new router was defective from he start.

So, if you cannot get things going, try a new modem or router.  The small expense could save you a lot of time, even if you find the original device was good -- Having a spare or two helps you test the next time an issue comes up.

Good luck.

Nick

Hi Steve - what's plugged into what?  ...;and is all the IP address allocation done with DHCP in the Sky router or do you have any fixed ip addresses lurking in your network ?

I've just solved an almost identical problem with my HDX SSD - which i think I bought off Roger on fleabay - system worked perfectly for years.  Then around January it stopped ripping and crashed completely.  It did need some servicing at HQ but when it came back i could not get it to stay connected to the shares or stores so there was no ripping function anymore.  I've had Phil on my network but to no avail.  I had sky modem router going into an old airport extreme.  Buying a new AE help me discover a double NAT error.  I know next to sod all about network and IT but it seems there were mixed messages between the NAS and the HDX.  I hadn't changed anything but it looks like its now solved.  I turned the DCHP off in the sky Router leaving the AE in charge. After a network restart router/laptop/switch/readynas/hdx i've now got the shares and stores on line and riooing again solidly.  So it could well be the SKY modem.  Give it a whirl.  Its taken me an age but it ooks like ive got this sussed today and your issues sounds very similar.  I got the advice from NickSeattle and i am much in his debt.

Guys

Thank you for your responses.  I have to say, I am a complete novice on all things network.  I have just got off phone from Sky and other than get the router user name and password (which I assume will enable me to get a new router and add these) was next to useless.  I was told that my Sagemcom router is old but is compatible with the Broadband Outreach fibre box but that I needed to contact Naim for the required "port forwarding settings" to make it all work.

The only fixed IP settings I have are on my NAS.  Do I change this?

mine is a sagecomm too.  type http://192.168.0.1 into your browser username admin password sky  go to advanced  then set lan ip setup then unclick use sky router as DCHP server.  providing of course your other router is dishing out DCHP all should be well after a rest.  i had to set a static address for my AE router to talk to the sky router so something like 192.168.0.3 and that will fix your internet through to it.  hope this helps

Steve,  definately remove the fixed ip address from your nas and reset it to DHCP managed addressing !

What Sky has told you about Naim and port forwarding is way off track !  There is no port forwarding that needs configuring in your setup.

I think the fixed ip on the NAS is at the root of your problems (but I could be wrong !)

btw - you haven't told us what's connected to what ??

By the way Steve, Nagual is assuming you have TWO routers, but I'm assuming you have a Sky router and a switch, so only the router is acting as a DHCP server and handing out ip addresses.

IF Nagual is right, then two DHCP servers in the network is asking for trouble    - do as he says and get rid / switch off DHCP on one of them.

(that's why I was asking what's connected to what)

Doh! I had made that assumption. Ive not come across an open reach box. Figured it was another router. I also had a streamer connected which had no problem communicating with the NAS. Having a look inside the DTC maintenance will help figure out  what's going wrong. Constant rescanning and shares/stores going offline  explained why I couldn't rip anymore.

I had an exact/similar problem in February and I ignorantly blamed US - details on this link

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...blem-cc-naim-support

Phil logged into my system & spent over 3 hours without success. I sent the US for service without solution. I contact Phil again, he was convinced it must be my network.

However, the problem in within Sky Router. I changed to an old disused "Belkin Router" (not a popular choice) & the scanning stabilise. I contact Sky for replacement router but we couldn't reach a mutual agreement. In the end I change my ISP to BT using BT Hub4. Everything is back to normal.

I would suggest to buy another Sagem (sky only supported) Router for approx £25 on Amazon otherwise Sky would try to sell the same router for £69. Or if you are out of Contract (like me) look  for deals with another ISP
