Best way to integrate spotify into the Nds?

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 02 August 2014

Sonos unit with digital out?
AirPort express - stream via airplay?

Hook up iPad/iPhone directly?

The third option seems to be the best in terms of not introducing an extra power supply unit, but is not as convenient.

Thoughts?

Further update....loaded Spotify and Musicflow onto my iPhone and it works. I confirm that the quality is not great and the stream is mono. Still can't get the software to work on my iPad. There must be a conflict somewhere....

Keith, well it is definitely mono here, and my NDX shows on the stream info screen LPCM 44.1/16/1, but mono aside it does sound better than Airplay here... But clearly something is not right.

Hi all,

I'm using my Ipad (ios 7) + iphone (ios8) + Spotify App  (via a 5 Mhz wifi area) in combination with the Apple Airport Express/optical cable to Unitylite without any problems.

Oke, not as detailed and clear as FLAC/WAV direct via NAS + ethernet cable to the Unity but for background and discovering music before buy it perfect.

Waiting for the Unity software update (promised in May, September etc, really a disadvantage of Naim) include Spotify, I'v tried yesterday the Musicflow app. It;s working in IOS7, not in IOS8.

But I've tried all: it is mono and stays mono. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any tips.

+1 for airport express. I bought it following some older observations from Simon as I had issues with my modem'is WiFi. Network issues completely eliminated and I use the optical lead from the AE to my NDX. Very happy with the sound quality for a 320kbps stream. As I remarked elsewhere if ever NAIM supports Qobuz streaming I will switch to that from Spotify.

I recall seeing a post on another thread, for quobuz into ndx.  It is awkward, but works well for any music source on your idevice:  locally stoted music, Spotify, Pandora, etc.

You plug your idevice into USB port of streamer.

Select USB input (if it doesnt auto select) using remote or other controller.

  Select and play any track.

  Pause the playback.

Now pick up the idevice (still on USB cable) and use its native interface to play music with the app of your choice.

Thanks to the forum member who first posted this.

I'm currently using this setup:

macbook pro > spotify beta desktop app > usb out > stello u3 usb to spdif converter > naim dc1 > NDS

Control is done using the spotify app on the ipad / iphone. Sounds jolly damn good!

I should also try using iphone > lightning cable > usb input in the NDS but I'm currently very satisfied with the sound so no hurry.
