Android Phone Messaging

Posted by: Dungassin on 08 August 2014

SWMBO insisted that she needed a mobile phone (God knows why, as she usually leaves it at home when she goes out!).   So, 3 months ago I went out with her, and she ignored my recommendation that I give her my iPhone 3GS and get myself a new one, and finished up buying a Sony Smartphone from PC World for about £100

I told her that she would have to learn how to use it herself, but today, she said that she had been sent text messages from our youngest daughter, but couldn't find them.  I, of course, assumed that she had somehow managed to delete them, but sent her a message from my iPhone.  Her phone made the receiving text noise, but I can't see it on her phone!  I should point out that I don't find messaging on her Sony phone at all intuitive, and every time she has had a problem I've always struggled for a few minutes trying to find her 'received' messages.

So, to you Android users ... how do you view messages on Android Phones?  I've tried Home>Messaging>, but can't see any option to view messages, and write message AFAICS, just wants to send messages to Orange.

Perhaps I'll try to persuade her again to go with my original suggestion and have my iPhone and get myself a new one.

Perhaps I'm being denser than usual today, but help would be appreciated

Yeah, but clicking on that opens whichever "window" was last open in messaging.  Clicking the icon that looks like a list opens various options, but under what I assume is the send message bit, there seems to be no option to send a text to anyone other than someone already in the contacts list, and the only way I can seem to get at old messages is to go to Contacts and click on the envelope icon next to any individual contact.

Is there any way of seeing all the undeleted received messages?

MUCH simpler on the iPhone, IMO.

I have an Android phone (hTC), messaging seems very easy to me and I'm useless with mobile phones.

On my phone there's a button with a solid triangle in a circle. Press that and apps are displayed, scroll to messages.

Or, when you have the home page open, press the screen for a few seconds, the screen will change to "add to home", touch the app logo, scroll to messages, when messages is touched messages shortcut will be added to homepage.

Well, I've managed to extract the phone from SWMBO's unwilling grip.  She's convinced I'm going to "do something to it"

It's a Sony Experia ST26i

Software version 11.2.A.0.31

Android version 4.1.2

Fatcat : The messaging app is visible on the first page of "Home", so no problem actually finding it!  On this phone you press an icon with a 3x3 square of squares (if that makes sense) to display the apps.

Our eldest daughter, who was a long-time Android phone user recently moved to iPhone, and even she had trouble using SWMBO's phone.

Just downloaded the manual for this abomination of a phone, and from reading this extract, it would appear that with this phone you HAVE to add a recipient to Contacts to send a message, and the only way to read a message (other than one just received) is to go via Contacts :

To create and send a message

  1. 1  From your Home screen, tap page48image9280, then find and tap page48image9648.

  2. 2  Tap New message.

  3. 3  To add a recipient, tap Add recipient, then find and mark the checkbox next to

the recipient name. To add more than one recipient, mark the checkboxes for the desired recipients. You can also enter the full number in the search field manually, then tap Add.

  4. 4  When you are finished adding recipients, tap Done.

  5. 5  Tap Write message and enter your message text.

  6. 6  If you want to add a media file, tap page48image14544and select an option.

  7. 7  If you want to add or remove recipients before sending the message, press .

To add a recipient, tap Add recipient. To remove a recipient, tap Edit

recipients and tap page48image16840next to a recipient field. When you are finished, tap Done.

  8. 8  To send the message, tap Send.

If you exit a message before sending, it gets saved as a draft. The conversation gets tagged with the word Draft:.

    To read a received message

  1. 1  From your Home screen, tap page48image19960, then find and tap page48image20328.

  2. 2  Tap the desired conversation.

  3. 3  If the message is not yet downloaded, tap and hold the message, then tap

    Download message.

When you receive a text or multimedia message, page48image22688appears in the status bar. To read the message, you can also drag the status bar downwards and tap the received message when the status bar is open.
