The Great War [1914 - 1918]

The BBC made a superb 26 part series on "The Great War" in 1964.

This link is to a youtube of a bonus episode [released later], and this brings us face to face with the recollections of the men themselves. It requires no commentary. There is no commentary in the film.

Here in the present, I'm enjoying Home Front, weekdays at noon on R4, and with a Friday night omnibus, more than anything official.

Yes it's very good Chris. In fact I think a lot f the stuff BBC TV and radio has been doing on the First World War these past couple of weeks has been excellent: Portillo's series on BBC2 about how the railways were used in the Great War, for example.

HF's got everything Kev! Jingoism, civic pride, a sensationalist tabloid press, snobbery, decent Christian people whose faith is challenged by circumstances, the missing Sam along with the McNaid boy, and if that wasn't enough, love across the class divide.

A very enjoyable Point of View by Lisa Jardine on when fiction writers come to historians' aid might interest anyone interested in my theme. Available on listen again on R4.

Well Kevin, granted, it was probably on a tad early for you on Sunday morning, but George, surely you must have heard it!?
