Horrible noise on HDMI.

Posted by: BigH47 on 10 August 2014

We have recently got a new TV a 42" LG, we have only been watching source from the Sky+ box via HDMI and everything seems fine.

To-day we decided to watch a DVD, but from both the  Sony BRP and the Pioneer DVD P/R when a DVD is is playing we get a horrible sound like very loud noise from an empty TV channel, not sure but is it motor boating?

Watching iPlayer from BRP or DTV on DVD P?R sound is fine just when a disc is playing.

Watched the DVD by taking analogue output through to NAIM system.

I'm assuming it's a setting on the new TV as everything was fine with our now dead Sharp.

Any ideas, please?

TIA

Howard

My SuperNait DAC won't decode anything but PCM. Whenever it gets anything else it makes a horrible noise like you describe. Maybe your DAC is suffering the same issue. Where is the digital-analogue conversion happening in your chain?

We found that our DVD player wouldn't output PCM from many (but not all) discs. We are now routing everything AV through our new TV which converts everything to PCM for the SuperNait so no more issues..

Don't know if this helps. Perhaps check the audio settings of your DVD and Bluray players?

Hi Howard, I suspect you've got the DVD/BluRay players outputting multichannel audio via the HDMI. Change the settings to stereo & all should be well. Maybe the Sharp TV was able to decode surround sound?

It seems my Sharp was OK with Dolby digital set as output LG not .

Changed BRP and DVD-R PCM to Dolby Digital - PCM and all seems fine now.
