Qobuz and drop-outs

Posted by: Goon525 on 24 August 2014

Having just cancelled Spotify Premium and taken out a subscription to Qobuz Hi-Fi in order to benefit from the higher quality, I've had a few problems this weekend with hiccups in transmission. As I have Virginmedia's 152 Mb/s service I feel it's unlikely to be down to insufficient bandwidth. I know there are a few Qobuz users here (come to think of it, anyone know if there's a Qobuz forum?), and I wonder if anyone else has had problems? It's just making me a little nervous about relying on the service for the bulk of my listening. I'm using the iPad app and an Apple TV box, dont know if Airplay could be contributing to the issue.

Make sure you have under import options selected the store locally.

I also work in disconnected mode with iPad.

furthermore using wifi connections is alway a bad thing IMHO, I use a PC with Pc Client

Goon525, ahh the access bandwidth myth.. It's worth pointing out that the latency/throughput on the internet is not governed just by (although typically it is on slower links) by the access speed. ISPs have peering arrangements (unless they wholly piggyback on somebody else's peering arrangements). These peering arrangements are the way a particular ISP routes to different parts of the internet by using different carriers. Sometimes these routes can be congested, especially if there is a spike of unusual bandwidth on a particular route and the ISP is caught with 'their trousers down'

Not to say this definitely happened here, but it's not just about access speed, and the higher your access port speed the more you are likely to see this.

Therefore try and keep frame/packet delays to a minimum on your LAN when you experience this for applications where it matters such as streaming, and that might mean stop using wifi unless you have a strong, clear, un congested wifi link and keeping receive buffers as large as possible.

Aha. Simon, it was down to you that I switched from wireless to wired for the link between my NAS and my SU for listening to downloaded music - and have had no further problems. It's a bit more problematic for the set-up for Qobuz streaming, as realistically I want to control it from an iPad app. I know others are suggesting using the USB input on the streamer and connecting physically to the iPad, but frankly that's an ugly and awkward solution for me (though I accept it may work!). (And this is why I'd love to see proper integration between Naim streamers and Qobuz.) There's a strong wifi connection between iPad and my AirPort Extreme router, they're only about 15 feet apart. But really I want to be able to use other Apps on the iPad whilst listening to Qobuz. That generally seems to work just fine - but from what you say may be contributing to my occasional problems. As always, your knowledgeable contribution is much appreciated.

For the record, I'm not suggesting you use a wired connection. I'm correcting posts which stated that it can't be done. It can be done and does sound better than Airplay, but I still use Airplay most of the time because it's more convenient.

I get dropouts too. It seems to be better than it was, but far from perfect. I think we have to accept that streaming is not yet a replacement for local storage and ownership.

And yet, Keith, in sound quality terms it's pretty much there (assuming one's happy with CD quality - but let's not go there!). If I could figure whether these occasional drop-outs are down to (a) Qobuz, (b) the Internet, or (c) my own network, I'd be a lot happier!

Paul, for best quality and for those subversive Qobuz moments, I connect my MacBookPro or even occasionally my Ipad (which is less obtrusive) to stream via async USB into my Hugo. FortunatelyI don't  experience  Qobuz dropouts on my humble 3.8 to 4.2 Mbps BT ADSL link and dedicated 802.11ac wifi media network.  I agree it means having an unsightly mac laptop and lead by my audio equipment.. But hey at such times I tend to have my eyes shut anyway

Fingers crossed Naim will release the Qobuz client next month and then we will be cooking on gas.
