RIP Dickie

Passed away just now, aged 90. People used to take the piss out of him as a luvvie, but he was a decent director and very good actor - in Brighton Rock, I'm All Right Jack, The Great Escape,, The Guinea Pig etc. His chilling performance as the serial killer Christie in 10 Rillington Place was a masterclass of restraint, and all the more terrifying for it.

Definitely one of the giants of Brit cinema.

Agreed, but I suspect he will be remembered mostly for Jurassic Park.

Likely true, but if that fact serves to get people to look closer at the  whole career that will be a very good thing.

Dickie gone then? Poor, poor Dickie...

A genuinely nice, gentle and talented soul. RIP.

From the papers review on R3 just now there were phrases like 'old school', 'gentleman', 'Garrick Club tie', 'good lunch'. Reportedly he'd no time for the box-ticking exercises of the BFI etc. 'When he had the idea for Gandhi in the 1960s, he got Mountbatten to introduce him to Nehru and the rest followed from there'. Classy.

RIP

RIP Dickie, great actor and director.

Does it really matter that he could only be remembered for JP?

If his name lives on his other works will be seen.
