Dark side of the Moon SACD rip
Posted by: Shaun McCullagh on 30 August 2014
Hi,
Has anybody ripped this SACD?
If so please could you tell me what the resulting bit depth and sample rate is?
Many thanks....
S
I suppose thats entirely dependent on the settings you used to rip it surely?
The original CD layer is 16/44 - not sure about the 5.1 layer, no point with 2 speakers
So 16/44 = 1411kbps is what it ripped as
I rip all CD with dBpoweramp thats set to "as source" with HDCD & Bit Depth = 16 min x 32 float, that way I do need worry about what is & is not HDCD, it loads whatever the CD bit & sample rate is.
Apparently one can rip the SACD layer from an SACD using an old Sony Playstation 3.
Sony carefully designed SACDs in such a way that a CD drive needs special firmware to read the SACD data thus preventing material being copied.
Current PS3's no longer support SACD and I think this format will disappear now that DSDxxx has arrived. However there are quite a few SACDs with classic stuff on at cheap prices....
Thanks for your input....

2.8224 MHz/1-bit
If you want DSofM in HiRes, search for the 4.1 Alan Parsons' mix (see http://www.quadraphonicquad.co...tM-underground-DVD-A)
download the ISO, which was released onto the internet.
Then in foobar2000 convert to 24-bit/96KHz 2-channel FLAC
Or if you have a multi-channel system, burn it to DVD and play it as a full quadraphonic recording, as it was originally mixed.

Aleg,
Have you had the opportunity to compare this resolution with a copy in 24/96 FLAC format?
If so, is the former noticeably better?
Cheers

I wouldn't know as I don't listen to this style of music.
But every SACD-layer rips to 2.8224 MHz/1-bit, just like every CD rips to 44.1kHz/16-bit.
It is just a matter of standardisation.
Shaun,
As Aleg has indicated an iso ripped from the SACD will be in DSD and will be in 2.8224 MHz/1 bit. Foobar has a plugin component (foo_input_sacd) which can play/convert the iso as 24 bit PCM/FLAC but the sample rate will be a multiple of 44.1KHz i.e. 44.1, 88.2, 176.4 or 352.8KHz. The default is usualy 88.2KHz.
Aleg & sjb,
Thanks for the explanation....
Given that foobar2000 can create FLAC files from the iso file does this mean the resulting FLAC file sounds the same as the iso format?
The reason I ask is Audirvana can read the original ISO file as well FLAC.....

Shaun,
Not a question I can answer. I can only play native DSD through my BluRay player which is set up through my AV system whereas I play the stereo portion of the ISOs via my streamer using JRiver which converts them to PCM on the fly.
