Airplay as Software upgrade for unitiqute and other streaming devices

Posted by: Sakis on 08 September 2014

I wonder if there is any chance for Naim to upgrade streaming devices (ex.unitiqute) with airplay technology after their introduction, of these technology, with mu-so...

I think, it will be a nice upgrade!

thanks,

And you're not the only one! But this has been discussed to death on these forums over the last couple of years. We await news, if any, allegedly this month (but I wouldn't bet the house on it).

You can use Airplay now if you get an Airport Express and connect it with an optical cable. Possibly a slightly low-fi solution, but for me that's not a problem as I only use it to play from my iphone, macbook etc. and stream higher quality music.

i know that, i have tried it, but the result was bad for my expectation. Also, it's a pity for unitiqute and for a good pair of loudspeakers to play music from apple's dac. I believe that If Naim integrate airplay technology (as done at mu-so)  into their streaming devices they will gain a lot...

I share your wishes, but I don't think you're quite right about using Apple's DAC. Surely the music is delivered to your Naim in the digital domain?

I see that mu-so has got Spotify sorted. I wish they'd started with Qobuz. I've just ditched Spotify Premium at 320k to go with Qobuz's CD quality streams, and I really don't want to go back. But I also don't want to lose the benefits of direct control of the stream from the streamer rather than through an iPad or whatever.

It is when using the AE (although it has an internal DAC) but you suggest the optical connection. The  limitation is that only Red Book (16/44.1) is supported.

Goon525 is correct that if you connect the AE with an optical cable, you bypass its DAC and give your Naim kit a digital signal. There are bound to be other limitations than the Apple DAC, but how much of this is Down to the Airport, and how much is inherent in any Airplay device, only time will tell.

Good question, I wonder if Naim has any plans regarding their servers??

Sorry but Airplay just isn't robust enough.  I think Naim is saving themselves from a HUGE headache by not using Airplay.

Even with very a very nice router and using AEs at the hifi, Airplay over wifi is extremely buggy with tons of dropouts.

Hi,

maybe I missed  something...could you describe me how do you connect unitiqute with airport?

(I have airplay and time capsule)

The limitation is, thats what airplay supports, you do understand that right?

What do you mean you have airplay and time capsule?

If your airport timecapsule is the main router and the uniti is on the same network then its already connected to the airport.

An Airport EXPRESS is a little device that you can connect to your uniti and use it to stream music via 'airplay' from an mac/iphone/ipad.

It sounds pretty crappy due to the fact that the sending device is 'pushing' and therefore you are basically using an ipad as a true 'source' over wireless. I have two expresses 'cause I thought I really needed it, they are both in a drawer somewhere.

Sorry, I meant apple tv (no airplay) and time capsule.

i have connected Apple TV with unitiqute via optical cable, so I have the advantages of easy of use, but the sound is terrible compared to what upnp offers with the same tracks. I suppose that if naim would be able to integrate airplay or another wireless technology into their devices would be great!

tomorrow I' m gonna see and listen mu-so...

Wouldn't Airplay come under the heading of downgrade?

Posted on: 09 September 2014 by likesmusic

Arcam have a streamer they call an airDAC that has Airplay functionality and is moderately priced, so it can't be impossibly difficult or expensive for a small company to provide Airplay.

Hi Goon525 and Sakis, for whatever it's worth my experience tells me otherwise:

i had terrible connectivity problems with my Streamer and NAS when I recently upgraded to VDSL (I suspect in the same country as Sakis) and following some posts by Simon-in-Suffolk I invested in a pair of Airport Expresses, one to serve as router (leaving "modem only" duties to my provider's device) and the other as receiver. The connectivity works superbly and I also have the option to stream Spotify via the "receiver" AE connected to my NDX with an optical cable. I find the sound not bad at all, certainly better than the alternative option of streaming Spotify via Bluetooth on a small Focal receiver (to be expected as in the latter case I use the Focal's DAC rather than the NDX DAC.). As the NDX DAC buffers the incoming signal I presume that the deficiency of "pushing" will be alleviated.  My only complain is that when I browse at the same time as I stream I might get a temporary gap in playback. Like many others I eagerly await the moment NAIM will natively support Spotify or Qobuz
