New iPhone 6 and iWatch

Posted by: Clay Bingham on 09 September 2014

Friends

I'm a bit backward in the cellphone arena, no smartphone as yet. However, check out the Apple website. The new iPhone is pretty stunning but the iWatch boggles the mind. Suddenly you visualize an interesting technological future. At their best, Apple is just amazing

I watched the first twenty minutes or so of the presentation, before the poor feed became too much for me.

Yes, the watch just amazed me. I'll give it a miss for now, but I wouldn't say now.

My iPhone 5 is up for replacement, so I think I'll be buying the smaller 6 on launch day. Sim free.

Not enough innovation for me. Bigger screens and more pixels? Jumped from 3 to 5 and will probably wait for the 7.

Why, after years of shrinkage when smaller phones were better phones, are phones now getting bigger?

Posted on: 09 September 2014 by Tony Lockhart
Because many people use their smartphone as their main computer, and a larger screen is much easier to use. 'Phones' can still be small, but few are sold.

Yes, much bigger. Because the use of phones is now largely visual (text, web, email, video, games, pictures, skype, etc). Think of them as mini-tablets than can still make calls if one REALLY needs to.

Don't we already have the iPad mini for that? Why the need for another sized phone to fill the gap. The whole thing is getting ridiculous!

Well yes, of course it is getting ridiculous. The iPad mini isn't a phone, though. But being able to choose from a range of sizes seems OK to me.

There are endless apps that will effectively make the Mini make and receive phone and video calls, Winki. Agree though that it is not a "phone" as we are accustomed to.

The big, bigger, biggest deal ist just a response to common customer demand, while I am not one of them. Just imagine the nerd ness of playing a song on your naim streamer by touching your I- watch....-

Great innovation and collaboration.  I guess I will be controlling music playback from my wrist soon.

Oh god, my phone is suddenly useless, redundant. Oh god I can wear something on my wrist that does a hundred things I don't really need. Oh god....buy, buy, buy.

Suckers

I can't really get too excited about a bigger iPhone (just got a 5S, so won't be upgrading) or a rather pointless and ugly watch as I have a perfectly good mechanical one, and do no exercise whatsoever.

I rather wish Cook had announced that iTunes was "going hi-res", and an updated iPod Classic that played 24/96 (or even 24/192) files.

Judging from the people present yesterday, Apple seem to be going after the "fashion" (ie, more money than sense or taste) crowd. A pity, as the company was once an innovator...

In fact, it seems that Apple has discontinued the iPod Classic - sad news.

If you go to the online Apple Store, it's no longer there.

Well that really annoys me!

When mine dies what do I replace it with? I only want a portable music store/player, not loads of functions I will never use. My Ipod classic is a 'perfect' device in terms of utility, function and design I think.

Grrr

I suspect you will always be able to find one on a "well known internet action site"

The increased size of the iphone seems to me to be a response from apple to the success being enjoyed by the likes of samdung whose last generation of smartphones went large and whose latest models are offered xl.  Apple really are following the trends on this one, not setting them.

Overall it is regression rather than progression to go from smaller to bigger.  Phone manufacturers would do better to develop smaller units but as :

1.Open/close booklet phones which will then double the size of a viewable screen area once opened up.

2.holographic "floating" screens which beam outwards from the unit itself to variable sizes for viewing,

Seems the new iPhone 6 is rather bendy! I bet there's some fretting going on within Apple HQ.

Still prefer the 4S design to the 5 or 6 myself.
