toslink and nd5xs

Posted by: Nicolas on 14 September 2014

Hi fellow naim lovers. I tried to get the audio out of my apple tv to my nd5xs. From the apple tv, the hdmi cable goes to the tv, and i want to get the audio into my nd5xs. I use a toslink cable from apple tv into the digital "input 2" in my nd5xs but when i select digital 2 in my nd5xs, it says "no signal". Am i missing something or doing something wrong? Maybe a stupid question...

Thx for  your help guys. Trying to love my naim system but i am having a few hurdles to overcome.

Cheers

I did the same half a year ago (my TV PC that replaced the VCR, the DVD player, the TV tuner, etc.) going into ND5XS via a TosLink cable and I remember I had to go to some sub-menu on ND5XS to enable the input - I'm away from the gear and its manual now, so I can't check, but I'll try to do it later. In the meantime, check all the menus and sub-menus, also, unplug the TosLink cable and check if you can see the red light at the end of its plug - meaning: the source is actually transmitting...

For me it works great now, good sound and I'm glad I have a galvanic isolation between the Naim gear and the electrically noisy PC.

......and once you've sorted the settings and think it's all ready to play, remember you'll probably need to restart your ND5xs before it will work.

Gajdzin is correct, you need to enable the input via the "inputs" menu on the front panel. Take care NOT to select "yes" for fixed output otherwise you could be in for a shock when you fire it up. I use it in a very similar fashion to get the audio out of my Apple TV - sounds great!

Good luck.

Congratulations  I'm a fan of Toslink for non-mission-critical applications like TV. Less electrical noise entering the main system, no RFI, ground loop problems, etc.

I had a similar problem with my ND5XS and a Toshiba TV (you'd think they could get TOSLink right), I never did get that working, but it works a treat from my old Sony Blu-Ray player!

It might be worth setting your ATV output to stereo. Otherwise anything 5.1 etc could give you the white noise.

Thanks nap-ster, I already tried that, I had to do it for the Blu-Ray player as well; The ND5 XS just couldn't lock on to the signal.
