Oh.

minimserver (which is what I use at the moment) is a little lacking in that respect.  I can define the native sort order, but I can't tell it how to respond to sort requests from the app.

It would be really useful if somewhere we had a list of uPnP servers and what problems they have with respect to the app and the various bits of hardware (and what platforms they're available on etc).

Thanks TJ! Yet another question: Are you working on fast forward/rewind function or in-track navigation for mp3 files? Presently it is not working with NDX/Naim app. I need this feature very often.

Hi Ollix2,

I have the 'In Track' FF/REV capability with both MP3 and AAC formats, however I am dynamically transcoding them to WAV.

My understanding is that the FF/REV function can only work on lossless formats, not lossy, hence it works once they are transcoded by the UPnP server.

That said MP3/AAC now only makes up 2% of my music collection, as I have worked on purging the lossy formats out in favour of lossless (FLAC or ALAC)

Simon.

New app, big improvement - but having the possibility to change themes and NOT be able to choose on with classic Naim color code is closing in on blasphemy! Green and black coming up soon?

Hi Simon, that's interesting. I also tried on-the-fly transcoding from MP3 into WAV with my Asset UPNP server but even then I couldn't browse trough a track. The slider bar and pointer were there and could be moved but the music didn't jump to the desired point.

Which Naim gear and UPNP server do you use?

AFAIK the FF/RWD function is generally also working for MP3 files, at least my Squeezebox, my satellite receiver and my Iphone are able to browse through compressed files.

Hi Oliver,

Just reconfirmed that FF/REV is possible on both MP3 and AAC formats, and yes, I can grab the marker and move it forwards and back during playback and the music follows.

I have a ND5XS/XP5XS and also use the Asset  UPnP server, but the version for the Raspberry Pi, which serves as a dedicated UPnP server to the ND5.

The WAV transcoding is set for FLAC, M4A (ALAC & AAC) & MP3, given these are the only formats I have present in my music library.

Thanks,

Simon.

I see many of the posts to this forum refer to the problems being compatibility of the NAS drive or software or something. I have a NAS for back up only. I use a Naim Uniti Serve for all my usable storage. it is networked with an original Uniti and Uniti Qute and still have the problems outlined by most people posting. Therefore, surely it can't be a compatibility issue (unless Naim have really screwed up).

Is your streamer on 3.22 firmware?

I know that the UPnP can-browse-but-not-play issue isn't affecting that many users - seems to be about a dozen or so at the moment - and it is believed that the version that we sent to Apple over a week ago (God knows why they're being so slow at releasing it for the AppStore - probably the backlog of app updates to handle iOS8 issues) should fix them ... it seems network dependent and not specific to certain UPnP servers themselves.

Cheers

It's not really possible for us to do so as there is no such thing as a perfect UPnP server ... what works for someone another person might hate. A prime example of that is the WD implementation of Twonky - we know that it has issues but I'm sure there are plenty of people here using it and perfectly happy with it.

At this time we either recommend our own UPnP server built into our servers (because it should be reliable and if there are any problems with it then we can fix them) or Asset UPnP as that seems to cause the fewest issues of all the other UPnP servers.

Cheers

Phil

Simon, thanks for the hint!  I updated my Asset from v4.1 to 4.3 and now FF/RWD is working when transcoding files to WAV. Obviously Asset has added that feature in one of the last releases.

Best,

Oliver

Please you have it sorted.

I have the 4.2 Beta release for RPi, as I wasn't happy with the 4.3 release, but I think this has worked in all of the RPi releases, which I think were on the Asset 4.2 codebase.

Thanks,

Simon.

The answer is Phil. How do I find out? I have tried several ways to connect to the Uniti Serve and only get blank pages or access as a guest. Just for info, this unit was returned to Naim earlier this year for repair, it ceased to function correctly. I don't know which firmware version is on the machine and can't see a way of finding this. I can view the web pages of the other two Naim devices but not this one.

You can find the version number for your *STREAMER* software (not your server - it's the streamer that needs to be on 3.22) by using the handheld remote and going to "Tools" -> "Factory Setting" -> "System Status" and finding the entry called "Version"...

Doh!: I have just been found the web page for the UnitiServe and now making my way around the menu.

Thanks for all the replies re. 'UpNp' compatibility' - seems I should activate it and see how it goes.

Basically if you can browse from the IR remote and see all your music and play it then enabling UPnP compatibility mode *SHOULD* resolve the issue and allow you to play and browse as then the app uses the streamer to browse the UPnP server ...

UPnP negotiation between renderers, control points and servers attempts to determine what devices can handle what so if a UPnP server 'sees' that it is being browsed by a device then it will try to determine what files it can play and what resolution cover art it can handle etc. some UPnP servers are getting their knickers in a twist when being browsed by the new app and are either giving out low-resolution cover art or might be filtering out some file types.

Hi Phil, regarding 'compatibility mode': When my Iphone goes into standby mode, the Naim app only keeps connection to the UPNP server (Asset) when I'm in compatibility mode. Whereas in 'normal' mode the app loses connection to the server everytime the Iphone is in standby mode. Afterwards I have to "kill" the app and restart it to establish a new connection to the server.

Do you have a solution for this? I don't want to use compatibility mode because in-track navigation is disabled in this mode.

Hi Olli,

When you are in compatibility mode the app does *NOT* maintain a connection to your UPnP server - the streamer talks to your UPnP server and the app talks directly to the streamer. It is likely in this instance that the issue is more to do with your router dropping UPnP traffic between the wireless and wired networks ... what router are you using? What version of firmware is your streamer on?

Cheers

All I've noticed activating it is that the album art under 'albums' is slightly smaller giving more per window on the iPad when choosing what to listen to.

Hi Phil, my router is a 'Fritzbox 7390', one of the most common in Germany. Firmware on NDX is v3.22. Oddly enough, other UPNP control apps on my Iphone like Plugplayer and ArcMC are still connected with Asset after standby mode.

Edit: I should add that I use WiFi between router and NDX.

OK - I believe that you have emailled us earlier today with this and I've passed it to the software guys for them to take a look at and give me some feedback for you.

I continue to have occasional issues with my NDS not seeing my uServe, and I'm thinking it's just this -- router dropping UPnP traffic.  Is there a way I can tell if it's the router?  The only thing that fixes it thus far is power cycling the NDS.

I'm using a latest-gen Time Capsule.  I don't really want to ditch it as my home router.

Are your NDS and UnitiServe hard wired to your TimeCapsule or is the NDS running WiFi? What firmware is your NDS on?
