New n-Stream app is here

I continue to have occasional issues with my NDS not seeing my uServe, and I'm thinking it's just this -- router dropping UPnP traffic. Is there a way I can tell if it's the router? The only thing that fixes it thus far is power cycling the NDS.
I'm using a latest-gen Time Capsule. I don't really want to ditch it as my home router.
Are your NDS and UnitiServe hard wired to your TimeCapsule or is the NDS running WiFi? What firmware is your NDS on?
If it's any help, I also have a 5th gen TimeCapsule (with up to date firmware). My Uniti and the uPnP server are both wired in and I haven't had any problems with 3.22. I used to have the odd problem with 3.13 but I'm pretty sure that the TC doesn't drop uPnP traffic.
If you're using wireless then the TC will proxy MAC addresses for when your machine is asleep or slow to respond. This might mean that an initial packet doesn't make it through properly but I've yet to see a problem like that on my network with any protocol.
Apologies if I've missed something, but has the "Play from here" function been removed in the new app?
Regards,
Nigel

Hi Phil, Everything is hard wired. NDS is on 3.22.000
When things calm down with the new app stuff at your end I'll arrange a session where you can log into my system if that be needed.

If I tap a track it plays all the subsequent tracks on the album.

Certainly seems to be the case, I raised the issue a week or so back but no response, hope its fixed it the next version.
Hello Naim.
Did you send the app to Apple by recorded delivery? it's been a while now.

Phil Harris' post from yesterday touched on this:
"I know that the UPnP can-browse-but-not-play issue isn't affecting that many users - seems to be about a dozen or so at the moment - and it is believed that the version that we sent to Apple over a week ago (God knows why they're being so slow at releasing it for the AppStore - probably the backlog of app updates to handle iOS8 issues) should fix them ... it seems network dependent and not specific to certain UPnP servers themselves."
Hi GraemeH. If I tap an album track it plays the whole album

According to appreviewtimes dot com it's currently taking around 11 days for a submitted app to be posted to the store.
Eleven days, so we won't panic just yet
I was aware of Phil's post. I was just imagining the conversation in Salisbury - "No, I didn't send it, I thought you did".

Graeme,
So it does :-)
It is a little misleading, however, because it reports that it's added all the album's tracks to the queue, but it starts playing from whichever track I've tapped.
Thanks,
Nigel.
hi
I do think sometimes people do not quite understand how the new app functions. You need to remember that it plays from a 'Play Queue'. and it offers alternatives to create a Play Queue.
If you select a track from an album by touching the track text it will load all the tracks of the album into a play queue and start playing the tracks of the album from the track you selected. If you however touch the dots next to a track then you have a choice of , 'play now' in which case it will put the track into the play queue and play the one track. You can also choose to 'queue next' or 'queue last' this enables you to construct a play queue of your own choices. You can also choose to add it to a 'playlist' which enables you to construct a new playlist or add the track to an existing playlist. Remember you need to select upnp at the bottom left hand corner of the screen to display the play queue. I hope this is of some help.

@ Keith, I thought you sent it?
@ musica, spot on. To see the now playing screen tap the bottom bar. When the now playing screen is showing toggling the list icon to the right of the transport controls will show and hide the play queue
Does anyone else see this? -- When I bring up a cd in the app, and look at the list of tracks, the name of the first track always looks a little fainter than the rest. It seems that something is going on graphically . . . the first track looks fainter (dimmer) than the rest. Or is this a "feature" I don't understand?
Also I, too, seem to have lost the alphabetical index along the right-hand side; I see now only little dots, not letters of the alphabet.
You may have tapped 'A-Z' in list or gid format where the alphabet changes to a line if dots. Re-tap 'A-Z' and the alphabet should reappear.

I think it's a contrast thing. I've just had a look and where the background graphic of the sleeve is light at the top, the writing seems less sharp. Similarly where songs disappear off the bottom they look fainter.
The more I use the app the more I like it, but then again it works perfectly for me. It will be nice to finally get the revised version, especially for the extra info on iRadio.
Mike,
Phil's description still stands correct in that in compatibility mode it is the streamer that acts as a control point not the mobile app. This works round potential compatibility issues with the router not handling UPnP properly from a mobile device (unfortunately quite a common problem) or there being a compatibility issue between the mobile device and the UPnP server such as wrong transcoding or delivery of wrong cover image size etc.
The difference with the new naim app and n-Stream is that the compatibility mode browser has been improved. In fact the same browser is also used for iRadio and USB. So for all these inputs the following improvements have been made:
- Faster list loading
- Much faster list searching
- Alphabetical sorting is now available - previously only the native sort order was available (tap A-Z button to switch between native and alphabetically sorted)
- Different size list and grid sizes (repeated tapping of list and grid option buttons)

I hope that I speak for a few others who are confused by these settings. Picking a piece of Phil's 02 July 2014 post as an example:
" Setting compatibility mode to *ON* can be useful if the UPnP server doesn't handle the n-Stream app being the control point but the streamer being the renderer (typically resulting in you choose something to play and the streamer comes up with "Can't Play" but the same track can be played if you select it via the streamers remote and front panel display) however some routers / wireless access points / bridges / Ethernet Over Mains devices have been found to drop UPnP traffic after a while and in this case setting UPnP compatibility mode to *ON* can also resolve that."
After having the UQ for well over two years, the various settings for 'compatibility' or 'streamer language' etc, make no sense. And although I appreciate all the work and time you (plural) put in on the products and this forum, the 02 July post quoted above does not add any clarity at all.
As an aside, I've been working with some software developers on tools for a cadd program; I'm not doing anything technical, but trying the tools and working with the developer on their function and interface. My point is that an app like N-stream / Naim, really should be operable without a user-manual. And the Naim app clearly needs a manual. As such, it needs to be provided. Perhaps the app has enough capability that the level of 'see it and use it' clarity is not possible. If so, fine; just give us two pages of guidance. Starting from the first time set up after installation alone would have saved pages of angry posts (especially from me).
The function and benefit of the various settings has never, to my searching eyes, been explained. Since these settings can affect the way the Naim hardware works with various parts of the system (hardware and software), a clear explanation of what the settings do might well preempt a lot of user frustration.
Thanks for reading. Sorry I lost the quote formatting.

Available now on app store
Aaah thats better
It wasn't there five minutes ago, and now it is, hurrah! Updated without a hitch, and now the sample rate shows. Marvellous.
Which app store? UK, US or other?
Got it now!
Hmm. Playing Radio Paradise. Look in the albums, open the Rovi booklet, and it shows what's playing on RP rather than details of the album. That's new!
And if the booklet is open, you can't change the volume. I've sent a note to Phil.
Thanks TJ,
Bit rate and buffer are back (although the later not on UPNP). Hopefully won't need it on UPNP.
Hopefully, the folks experiencing issues will be pleased.
Cheers,
Keith
Would like the status of the buffer displayed, just in case of networking/streamING issues.
Thanks,
Simon
