Back Up NAS

After much deliberation I have now acquired a QNAP NAS and finally backed up my Unitiserve to it. The process of set up was initially simple using the knowledge base procedure but I did have a major problem in allocating the Naim Backup file as the designated back up destination as Nserve simply refused to do this.

The solution for others who may have this issue is to ensure that the file you are designating is completely empty. The QNAP NAS allocates a recycle folder when you create the file and this must be deleted before designating the file as the backup. Thanks to Hungry Halibut and his Synology thread which I finally found for this solution.

A quick question for the experts if I may. Nstream is now showing the QNAP UPNP stream as well as the Unitiserve. Do I need to disable this or does it make no difference?

Hi,
I can't see it making any difference as you should have a mirrored copy in theory.you could if you wanted have multiple upnp servers with different music then just choose which one you want from the list.
For my backup I purchased two 1 tb external drives.i only back up to them when I add new music, keeping 1 at my house and 1 at my dads house.this way they are not powered up all the time and sit happily in their boxes till I require them.

I'm glad you benefitted from my experience. It's a bit tricky, but once set up works really well. As I only use my Synology for backup, I removed its upnp server to avoid the issue you describe.

I'd advise you to rip to flac and set the serve to transcode to wav for playback. Flac files are so much more flexible for metadata.
