N-STREAM app upgraded to Mu-So - Uniti no longer works
Posted by: CaptainBlack on 28 September 2014
I wonder if you knowledgeable people can help me.
I have a UnitiQute (about maybe 18 months old) been working fine.
Got back from holiday to find my iPad had helpfully updated n-stream to the new Mu-So App.
Only problem is I can no longer use the App to play music via UPNP on the UnitiQute. The app starts, finds the Uniti, displays the folders, etc, but when you select a track to play it pauses and then doesn't play.
I have rebooted the iPad, Uniti and Synology NAS but it still doesn't work. I can still play music via UPNP using the remote control so the UPNP and networking aspects are all still working fine.
The iPad is on IOS7 (shortly to be updated to IOS8) and the software in the UnitiQute is "BC SW 10733" (whatever that means).
Stuck now :-(
Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.
Steve
Hi Steve,
It is possible the new Naim app is having problems with your older version of Uniti software. Something that will probably fix it in the short term is from the app settings switch on UPnP compatibility mode:
Settings > Input settings > UPnP > Compatibility mode
I would also recommend that you update your Qute to the latest firmware that can be downloaded from our website. It offers several improvements over the version you are currently running.

Having looked at the available firmware updates, do I just go for the latest (in one hit) i.e. 3.17?
Previous posts have indicated that you have to increment through the updates.
Also, how does one find out what firmware version is already implemented in a UnitiQute?
For example, does BC SW 10733 relate to the f/w version?
Thanks
Steve
Steve,
The latest version for your product is 3.22
No need to incrementally update. Download the firmware updater here:
http://www.naimaudio.com/product/unitiqute-2
The firmware version can be found here on the front panel menu:
Factory Settings > System status > Version:
While we are talking firmware upgrades, is it a pipe dream to hope for automated updates controlled by the app, without the need for laptops and cables? The updating process is something of a pain. Is such a change anywhere on the development roadmap?
Good question HH, my guess is they would if they could.
I did a lot of soft & firmware work in my pre-retirement life
My department was the test & verification buffer between the developers & end-users so we tended to do quite a lot & sometimes quite a lot daily.
If Naim f/w is the same as the stuff I was involved in, the data file is large & maybe best done with a secure wire anyway, but most importantly is a system overwrite. My old cmpy stuff was wireless as in talking to equipment via cell phone &/or satellite, the need for a fixed wire was because the wireless link was shut down & the file overwritten, so the wireless link would have been lost in the process. I guess Naim is much the same.
I'm just a humble bean counter, so this software malarkey is a bit beyond me. My simple reasoning is that if my iPad can move to iOS 8 by pressing a button, my SuperUniti should be able to move to 3.23 or whatever in the same way. The iOS was a complete new operating system. I'm sure it's more complicated in reality, but the hope remains.
It is more complicated than that (of course)...
The current Uniti products separate the 'streaming' functionality from the main analogue preamp and power amplifier sections and it is not possible to do 'over the air' automatic updates of both sections - hence why the updater requires both a serial / USB connection and a network connection.

The app description (at least on the Apple App Store) states that this is available for my-so...and the stub exists already for (at least) Uniti devices too, since the "Rooms" page diplays a hook to your exiting firmware version when you touch the icon of the device rather than "entering" the Room by touching the text name of the device. In short: I guess "yes" this feature is coming. We may see a per-device roll out, but I feel that the smart money is on this arriving in the app alongside the release of the next firmware update...or possibly with the one following that, just in case firmware code is required to make the new update process work. As as to logistics for delivery and install, I think it will not be so different than via a computer and rs-232 or usb: first a download of the file to your "installer" device (iPad or Android whatever rather than PC or Mac), then a transfer (via wifi intranet rather than a cable) to your Naim. not as trivial to re-code as to imagine, but well within the talents of the development team. Argh... Smart money seems to have lost this bet...

Can I really go for 3.22?
My Uniti is an original Cute not a Cute-2
Thanks for your help thus far (and all posters above!)

Thanks Phil - I rather suspected that would be the case. I'm sure I'll cope, and if not I know who to call......

Yes - 3.22 is applicable to *ALL* streaming clients (Uniti 1 & 2, Qute 1&2, UnitiLite, SuperUniti, ND5, NDX, NDS, NAC172) as long as they are on version 3.00 software or above ... if they're still on V1 or v2 then it's a dealer visit to get updated.
Cheers

Mu-so is designed very differently and we can update the firmware for that over the network connection ... the app itself will tell you when there's an update available and give you the option to install it or not.

Thanks Phil,
Would love to delve into this, but understand how busy things are at the moment and for upcoming roll-outs...
That said (LOL) I would love to learn that your development roadmap includes an agenda (and perhaps a onetime embedded OS update) to bring UnitiX and other non-mu-so equipment onto equal footing here. The two-step update seems less problematic than whatever "missing API" or device driver equivalent is preventing a switch from serial port delivery of updates to Internet delivery... The chat over equivalence of concept versus complexity of implementation would be worthy of a (virtual) beer!!

I'm sure a virtual beer can be chatted over - you know the email address to reach us on. :-D

when I click on naim nd5xs on my wlan-router interface then the "naim web-interface" opens:
it says that the firmwareversion is 2.something, upgraded in 2013. All other is information fully fresh and correct.
When I look directly in the streamer by pushing buttons on it, it says: streamer version 3.23.
What is right? (by the way, when I read here in the forum, it says the newest firmware is 3.22).
I'm confused.
Guys
My UnitiQute is running 3.0.0 so I guess I can upgrade straight to 3.22.
Also, the compatibilty mode thing has temporarily fixed the problem.
Thanks to all
Steve
Update: having purchased a USB to RS232 adapter, installed the drivers on my laptop, and run the 3.22 updater I have updated the Uniti to 3.22 and turned off the uPNP compatibility setting in the App. Everything is back to normal. Thanks for all your help.
