On an Island - David Gilmour

Not strictly a Hi-Fi question but.....

I have just purchased a copy of this album and cannot release the disc from the packaging to play it

The disc seem to be held on by a strange foam pad

The disc does not seem to want to release

Any ideas as I don't want to damage the disc or packaging

As you are in the US can I assume you are referring to the Columbia version cat # 8 2876-80280-2 ?

Are you talking of a CD or vinyl?

Hi-Fi Corner? Not.

I am in the UK and it is the CD version

Just hold the cd by the edges and poke the foamy bit.

Ok, I think I get the joke in the profile!

if your CD has a foamy pad just lay the packaging on a flat surface, press firmly with the middle finger of one hand on the foam and grasp the edges of the disc with the other, rotating the disc clockwise/counter-clockwise swiftly whilst pulling upwards with fair force. I have a number of these beggars but since I ripped the music, I don't rip cardboard

Thanks Hafler30

Your advice worked

I shall be storing this disc in a separate jewel case!!

I am surprised Mr Gilmour signed up to this packaging

There are no fragile plastic teeth and you dont have to slide an optical surface out of an abrasive  sleeve, as long as you know to press the foam it works better than the usual rubbish, at least until the foam perrishes.

You should have pity on Mr. Gilmour; he has to do the process in reverse each time he packages a cd.  I have read that he believes it may shorten his playing career, but nevertheless he has to do it as good help is hard to find these days.

The foam was put there to protect you from playing this dire album for as long as possible.

Indeed, not a great album. I struggle to find it engaging, and boy, have I tried.

Well, I like it.

(which is as pointless as saying 'I don't like it')

Well I do like it & I don't consider that pointless.

Loki, a good idea is to watch DG playing the "On an Island" tracks on the DVD packaged with the CD album "Live in Gdansk".  The mastery of DG & the interaction with the other musicians is something a bit special.  If that does not help you appreciate it (appreciate is not "like") it probably means you don't understand what he is doing, his music, his style & genre & probably won't/don't understand that type of music no matter what.

No probs, you will get over it.

That's the beauty of spotify and qubiz and maybe other sites. We can now try the music before we buy.  Everyone to their own but I for one can't seem to like the album and as others have said.  I have tried.

Plus it's a pity Naim do not allow personnel communication as if anybody wanted this album they would be welcome to my copy

Having now got the CD out of the packaging and into the player I must say it is a niche album, perhaps better suited to those late at night low level sessions, to quote SWMBO/HI 'atmospheric'

His first album was superb the second dire, this one is somewhere in between

Got my copy in a second-hand record shop in Croydon so the previous owner had overcome the unusual means of securing the CD. Must say I quite like the rubber grommet fixture and the book-style packaging.  I like the music, too.
