UnitServe and downloaded HD files on NAS

Posted by: sicoughaunt on 05 October 2014

I've downloaded a King Crimson show from the dgmlive website. The files are FLAC, and are stored on my Synology DS213 in a folder labeled HD downloads. This folder is separate from my naim_music Store (adjacent, not a subfolder) created when I ripped my CDs to this drive using a UnitiServe SSD. The UnitiServe is set to rip to .WAV, and is running firmware 1.7a_sp1. I cannot get the UnitiServe to recognize either the .FLAC files, or the .WAV files (converted from FLAC using Music Converter). I haven't been able to find a topic which explains the potential tagging, location, other issues clearly, and I'm starting to get irritated. Thanks.

Does it usually recognise that folder?

I added Flac and Wav files to my NAS (Lenovo) but put them in the same folder as the store and they work fine. My US is the 2TB not the SSD version.

It sees the folder as a Share, because I added it.

If your uServe sees other files in that Share (folder), then either it simply hasn't re-indexed yet, or there is a tagging or file naming problem with that King Crimson album.

First, force a re-index.

If that doesn't work, check the file and folder names. There should be no 'special characters' - just letters and numbers.  Same with all of the tags.  Non-English characters, symbols, etc., will prevent proper indexing.  It is not unusual for purchased downloads to include tags that the uServe (or other servers) doesn't like; you often have to tweak the tags.

The HDX could be slow to reindex, even after instructed to. Stuff used to turn up eventually. I'd shove new stuff on a stick until two copies of it turned up in nStream or nServe. It could take minutes to days.

If you force a re-index, it should sort itself out straightaway.

Yeah. Never got to the bottom of that. Moot now since the HDX has gone and Minmiserver refreshes are instantaneous. Nevertheless, prolonged refreshes on HDX and US have been doing the rounds for years. Often, for whatever reason, time and patience are all that is required.

Tried re-indexing twice via Synology's control panel - no go.

You need to tell the userve upnp server to reindex, either through the dtc or I guess nserve also can do it.

When I copy large 24 bit  albums to my share on my readynas, I try to remember to turn autoindexing off, copy the files and turn it on again and force the server to index the share. From 1.7 firmware the automatic indexing normally works fine and added albums shows up as soon as they are copied to the share, but sometimes it can go wrong and my guess is that it takes too long to transfer big files, and this in some way confuses the server.

A forced re-index is far from always necessary.  Sometimes a newly added download appears almost instantly.  Other times, not so instantly.

+1 regarding the special characters. This has caused problems for me on a few occasions but easily corrected even just in the file name, not using a metadata editor.

My one wish for future development is that the U Serve will recognize and index Hi Res downloads the same way it recognizes CD's. Currently some of the search features, including album artist and compiser fields are not seen by the U Serve with downloaded files.
