XLD gives gaps with AIFF on NDX

Posted by: Muziek liefhebber on 11 October 2014

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem. I'll rip my cd's which XLD on an iMac to AIFF (gapless) and store them in an Itunes library on a NAS, (Sygnology DS213). When listen to my music on my Naim NDX there are gaps in the music. These gaps aren't hearable on the CD. This is horrible to classical music.

How can I fix this.

I don't use XDL or AIFF,  but I know a guy who does

He uses XDL with FLAC & says its probably how you have set XDL

It needs to be set to "Include pre-gap for all tracks" or "exclude pre-gap"   so I guess you need to have it set for "exclude pre-gap"

I'll use the settings Pregap exclude.

I use XLD to rip to AIFF and always include pre-gap (it only adds a pre-gap if actually on the disc - this gets the closest representation of the disc as possible, and on some live discs some crowd noise, artist chit-chat, etc is included in the pre-gap area - which is lost if you don't include).  I have no issues with gapless playback.  I suspect your issue lies somewhere outside of the XLD software.  (FYI, I also use a Synology NAS and a NDX.)

My first question is are you currently up-to-date on your software & firmware for XLD, the NAS (DSM) and NDX?

+1 on updating the Synology software,  I believe gapless only works properly from DSM 5

I also know it does not work at all if transcoding

One of the crucial aspects of replay of classical music, either live recordings or studio, is that the gapless transition between tracks works seamlessly.

It is one reason why I started with iTunes, where the default setting is correct without the need to fiddle.

And iTunes works beautifully with AIFF as you would expect.

Consulting the Forum years ago I was sent to XLD for ripping and Media Monkey for playback. I rejected both very soon after experimenting as being not dissimilar to exercising camels ...

I found iTunes was free to use on a Windows PC, and worked properly and well. Now I have a MAC, which works perfectly and completely reliably ...

I'll just upgrade the NAS to DSM 5. I haven't heard gaps. I will check it but it looks like this is the solution.

Good idea to keep the updates current

If you don't go looking in your private Synology webpage,  you can set your Synology to send you a email about any/all changes & updates.

It’s in Control Panel - Notifications

Setup is simple but maybe confusing for a non IT person

Recipient = youremailname@emailaddress

Service Provider Set to one on the list – or if not on the list ….

Service Provider Set to = Custom SMTP Server

SMTP Server Set to = smtp.emailaddress that follows “@”

SMTP Port 25

Authentication Required  = Ticked (Checked)

Username = youremail@address

Password = Your email password

Apply – if its OK it will say its OK,  or warn if something is wrong

Use “Test email” to be sure

I've just bought a serial usb connector. My Naim NDX has 3.16 firmware. The 3.17 update is only for Windows and I use a Mac. Would it bee harmless to skip the 3.17 and install de 3.21 and 3.22 update.

I would suggest trying 'dbpoweramp' for Mac, currently in Beta on the dbpoweramp forum. Also switch to ripping as WAV.

I don't think thats the question J.Saville,

I suggest you e-mail Naim for the answer,  I believe you need to first download a USB driver for the Mac & it might be you must first download 3.17 before 3.22.  The USB driver instructions are included in the download package.  But I am not 100% sure on how it works with Mac - Naim email has the answer.

Oh I agree that the latest firmware will help! You don't need to do incremental updates. I recently updated a Uniti from 3.00 to 3.22 without issue.

But I also think that using software recommended by Naim as the best third-party ripping software in the market can't hurt either...

I've update the Nas and my NDX, but still I'll hear gaps in Opera's. This isn't what I want. How to act?

I am really out of ideas - my NDX with Synology on DSM-5 runs gapless perfectly.  The only difference is I have all .wav albums (not .aiff) but that should not make a difference. I mentioned it will not work with transcoding activated,  have you checked that ??

Are you certain that you have firmware version 3.22 installed on your NDX streamer? This version of the firmware fixed an issue with the buffer which would run down towards the end of each track resulting in gaps in playback.

is this buffer issue what you are experiencing or is your ripping software inserting the gaps between the tracks?

There's firmware version 3.22 on the NDX for sure.

Where would I'll find transcoding? In settings XLD?

Posted on: 10 November 2014 by Mike-B

First - have you upgraded to DSM-5.1-5004 ???

If not do it & try that to see if gapless works

If still not gapless after DSM-5.1

-  In Synology Media Server

Open your Synology webpage

Touch the button with 4 boxes in to left corner to open main menu

Open Media Server > open DMA Compatibility

Here you will see at the top a "check" box to enable transcoding

If its checked - uncheck it

Try that

If it is not checked - check it & also check all the check boxes .flac .alac .ogg & .iaff

Do not check box marked "downsample audio files ..........."

Try that

If still not gapless

Check the box marked  "downsample audio files ..........."

Now I am out of ideas other than converting a file from .iaff to .flac or .wav to test
