N-serve with NDX?

Posted by: naimtheday on 17 October 2014

Can you use n-serve with an NDX? It looks like a good GUI to access your music but having installed it on my iPad (IOS8) it doesn't find it.

My music is stored on a Synology NAS

Any ideas?

Thanks

nServe is for HDX & UnitiServe

NDX & the other streamers work with nStream - its now the combined Mu-So & streamer control that is listed in the Apple Apps store as "Naim"

And the UnitiServe! nServe is excellent for editing the metadata, changing album cover art etc. But as Mike says, you need the new nStream app to operate the NDX.

Thanks HH and Mike-B, I am using the latest version of "naim" a black icon'd app in the App store.

What I was hoping to do was use n-Serve with my NDX and Synology NAS as it looks like a nice easy to use app.

The problem I have with "naim" app is that every time I go back to it from my iPad it has reverted to base one and I have to point it where I want it again.

Also a lot of the album art is right but a lot is muddled despite being as far as I can see correctly ripped.

There have been what seems like a million posts on the new app, and various challenges people have been having. Have a look through them if you have a bit of time. On the face of it you may need to update the firmware on the streamer to 3.22, and possibly ensure that your IP addresses on the streamer and NAS are fixed, which makes everything more stable.

Thanks again HH, I had upgraded from 3.09 to 3.22 which helped a lot (3.09 worked fine for me until I installed ios8 on my ipad!).

I have fixed the IP address on my Synology NAS as well as part of my attempt to get it all to work with ios8.

I am not sure if my NDX IP is fixed or not. How can I tell / fix it?

My frustration now is that I do not see album artwork when I display my music on the NAS (usually "by folder" I just get hundreds/thousands of folder outlines with artist names under them.

NTD - feels like I am getting there . . . .

To get the folder & other displays sorted I suggest you try clearing the cache & reset the app, this seems to fix most of the new 4 series app display things for me every time it gets into trouble.

You don’t say what your wireless router/hub is, or how it’s all connected between NAS & NDX.

My set up is NDX running 3.22 firmware, network cable connection via 1gb switch to Virgin Superhub 2 getting 162mbps all day and night, Synology NAS network cable connection to switch. NAS IP is fixed, Just turned NDX, Hub, Switch and NAS off and restarted all. IP address on NDX changed from 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.0.7 so not fixed. NDX. Ipad running ios8 with latest "naim" app.

Just tried entering ip address and it says;

onnection Status:connected
Signal Strength:not available
Wireless Channel:not available
Firmware Date:2013-07-16
Firmware Version:2.0.58.12905

How do I fix the IP address?

If I click on Device Status or Profiles it says I am not connected.

Should I try and fix the NDX IP address and if so, how please?

You need to set the IP in the router, just like you did for the NAS. Then set the IP in the front screen menu of the ndx to match what you set in the router. You then need to tell the router to allocate dhcp addresses higher than the range you are using for the system. For example, I use 110 for the SuperUniti, 120 for the UnitiServe and 140 for my Synology. The router then allocates dhcp at 200 and above. This ensures you can have no IP conflicts.

Thanks HH, I delved into the router settings but couldn't find what I needed. I will have another go when I get back Sunday week as going away for a few days. Thanks as ever NTD

Hi NTD & HH   - NTD, I am not saying don't do what you are doing, far from it

- but FYI only - I have my static IP addresses set differently after being advised by a BT back office engineer. (I have a BT-HH4)

I set the NAS & NDX IP addresses to "static" in the wireless router only – it’s the router that manages DHCP IP allocation - if left on DHCP your NAS & NDX will follow whatever static IP address the router has reserved for their MAC addresses.

Also with BT routers,  having a static IP address in the router only allows the device(s) to be visible on the BT Home Hub web management page, whereas fixing the IP address in the device(s) as well prevents the BT wed page from seeing the device(s) & limits its management ability.  I have no idea if the same problem is found with Virgin web management,  but might be worth keeping in mind.

Perhaps I should say that what I have done (advised by my geeky friend who is an IT whizz) is on a DrayTek router, which seems to be endlessly configurable. BT, Virgin and other routers may not work in the same way. The end result is that the network is rock solid and everything finds everything it needs to, and nothing it shouldn't.
