Any Mac users that have upgraded care to offer an opinion?

Can't wait to meet you, strange that Peter has made it black tie though

That's in preparation for the funeral of his 555, after he's heard the Hugo...

It was a close thing but it looks like there will be a new baby in Peter's home soon.

Just updated on this MPB. Seems fine. Simpler icons/logos are the only thing that I've noticed different thus far.

What do you "really like"?

Posted on: 19 October 2014 by Jeff Anderson

Everything seems to have gone smoothly since upgrading two MacBook Pro to Yosemite.

However, because of that or maybe coincidence, some strange things are occurring and think it is possibly caused by defaults for which I might be able to choose another option.

Several forum and similar locations are requiring me to log-in at least everyday and some more then once in a day.  I really don't think these locations - including Naim Forum - hold potential security problems for me if I remain logged-in except when changes made by providers require the "occasional" log-in.

I do use the "recognize me" or "permanent" check-box options when available, still having to log-in the following day.

Is there a default setting in Yosemite/Safari I need to change ?

thanks

Jeff A

note - the worst one of these I have experienced was years ago when there was an update for iTunes which reset the volume to zero.  I'm a simpleton,  but it wasn't the first thing I checked.  Grrrrrrr.

Gawd, I wish they wouldn't go so fast! I've only just updated my MBP from Snow Leopard to Mavericks!

Posted on: 19 October 2014 by Bart

I rather like the "flat" look.  Simpler icons, etc.  I do think it's easier on the eyes.

Posted on: 19 October 2014 by BigH47

Quite like the new look, can't say I've noticed many differences yet. What I have noticed is that I seem to be losing sleep waiting for updates to be processed. Yosemite, iPhone/iPad  OSX 8.

Tonight I thought I would FB a couple of pictures, tried to open iPhoto "you need to upgrade iPhoto8 instal iPhoto Library Upgrader" so wait for upgrader to load and now wait for database to be updated.

Just updated the second computer (headless Mac Mini) to Yosemite. Had to connect the keyboard and mouse, as well as put the TV as a monitor to log on for the first time, but otherwise great. Hopeful that the in-built screen sharing will be a bit more stable than past OS. Previously had to exit the program and restart it to get it to reconnect after an extended idle period.

Posted on: 20 October 2014 by Steve J

The screen share is more stable Winky. It's also seems higher res and faster with no lag on the cursor.

Yes, seems much better when it is working. But this morning, my Mac Mini had gone to sleep and nothing but a hard reset would wake it Not LAN, USB mouse nor bluetooth keyboard would get a response. I hope this pattern is not repeated.

55 minutes and up and running again.

Excellent. New version of iTunes as well, and must update iPhoto.

I waited for any silliness to emerge, and none seems to have.

ATB from George

PS: I am a computer numpty, so if MAC can make something more or less foolproof then they are to be commended ... I got my Mini almost exactly two years ago, and it only missed a beat once when it stopped responding to the mouse. Flat batteries. Oooh errrrh, missus!

You have a couple of options:

1. Jump over to Energy Saver in System Preferences and set the slider to 'Never' to prevent the Mini from sleeping. This is the most reliable way to run a headless Mac. This is how my dedicated Mac Mini music machine is setup. If you use OS X Server this setting should be automatically applied under the hood.

2. Not everyone wants or can have their Mini powered up all the time. Hardware issues can often resolved by an SMC and or PRAM reset. You'll find instructions at the bottom of this KB article. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357

Yes, it is Howard, but for some reason my Chord QBD76 HDSD does need a driver (don't think the Hugo does...)

Yes, you can just leave the iMac running without worry. when Yosemite's downloaded the 'puter asks if you want to go ahead & install it. Mine's just finished downloading after starting 10 hours ago. The joys of living in the back of beyond!

Hi Guys,

Every device needs drivers ... it's just 'unusual' to actually see their presence in OSX world - that's mostly hidden behind Apples nicely polished exterior.

Cheers

Phil

I did have it set to never sleep, and I re-checked that once I got going again. Seems fine now.

I am all Apple. iPhone, iPad Air, and iMac. Trouble is, my HP printer is now rendered useless. HP say they can't keep up with Apple's continuous upgraditis.

I'm scared to upgrade to Yosemite in case all my other stuff ends up in the bin. It appears that most companies won't update drivers/software after the item is 4 or more years old. I had a Sony Blu-ray player that wouldn't play a Muse Blu-ray disc, because the disc was so advanced, the player couldn't cope with it. Tried to update the software, but without success. What did I do? I did what they want you to do...buy a new one!

I've been having a few issues with Yosemite. Occasionally when playing music via Audirvana + I get logged out of the computer when the music ends. In addition, when on the internet searching for album covers of ripped CDs I get drop outs of the music that I never had before. Having said that I am thoroughly enjoying the improved SQ Yosemite seems to have effected on the music replay.

The download for me I guess was about an hour. Install went well on my laptop. The only casualty was it "knocked out" Windows 7 some how. Windows reported that it was not a genuine copy and activation was needed. Obviously this was not true, as I had been using it with no problems for a year under Parallels. I phoned Microsoft, they gave me a new code and all is working. I did upgrade Parallels to latest version and all is working. Ironic that Windows is the software giving me grief during a Mac update. If Solidworks and Sage were offered on a Mac platform then I could kiss Windows goodbye for ever!!

Suffice to say I love the new update, especially that if I get a phone call to my iPhone that my Mac now rings as well I can take the phone call from there.

Where will it all end....beam me up Scotty!!!

Try NX for Mac to replace Solidworks....

Steve, interesting that you are experiencing improved SQ from Yosemite.  Is this through using iTunes only or with Audirvurna 2.x or Audirvirna 1.x?

Hi Jude,

It's bizarre and totally unexpected but there is a definite improvement playing music through Audirvana now I've downloaded Yosemite. I can't explain it as AV bypasses iTunes Audio Midi. Stu, ex of this parish, has found the same. I haven't upgraded to AV 2 yet. Have you?

How's it down in Exeter? My wife was impressed how the shopping centre has been developed when we were down a few weeks ago.  I was out on a boat fishing at the time.

Hi Steve,

I am using AV 1.5.12 (which is the version before the release of AV 2.0, I believe) and Mavericks as I have optimised it for audio and do not want to take the plunge quite yet (without checking that the opt'isations also work on Yosemite).

I have checked the Computer Audiophile site where are active discussions about AV and Yosemite.  There are mixed views, albeit no negative ones, about what happens when folks upgrade to Yosemite. Great also to hear that you have experienced a windfall benefit.

So, very tempting to upgrade to Yosemite.....

Exeter feels like it is posher and more hip place it was when I first moved here 15 years ago. Yet , in my view it has kept it's provincial and rural charm and still feels like a town rather than a city, but with the amenities of a city.  So, were you fishing on holiday?

Steve

I am liking the SQ of my setup after the upgrade, but can't imagine it has anything to do with the OS.

Nice OS, though. After some really minor niggles, I'm impressed. Screen sharing is much more reliable and stable. Backups are still happening seamlessly. Haven't found any programs that won't run.

Say hi to Stu from Winky. I hope he's doing well. Missed by many around these parts.

Chaps

I upgraded Mrs Micks MBP a few days ago and my only complaint was that it took just under two hours and for most of the time I did not know if it was upgrading or not. You have just got to walk away and let it happen.

I think it is now a much cleaner machine and yes I prefer it.

Regards

Mick

Upgraded to Yosemite with A+ v1.5.12.

The only issue is as Steve's ( i.e., logging without any reason after a track has ended).

SQ wise, I can't hear any difference compared with Mavericks. Still sounds fab.

In respect of A+ v2.x, not going to bother with it at all, or only when it is mature. Currently, it seems to have the same issues as the latest Naim apps (i.e. Music library niggles) and Its up to v2.04 already.

Nevertheless, there is supposed to be an SQ improvement, although it is not clear whether this better than v1.5.12 or just optimising v2.0 and how the software works with with its new music library feature.

Apparently, a remote app is being considered, with no promise of a release date.

I am enjoying the latest Led Zepp. 4 hi def. downloads from Quboz......

Hi Jude,

I'm sticking with version 1 as well, for the reasons you gave. Being logged out from the computer now only happens when I switch AV off. Still bloody frustrating though.
