Streaming

I am a big naim fan. I have owned an XS,  Supernait 2, HiCapDR, 282,dac v1 etc but what I have never been drawn to was a naim streamer.
Most of my music is either CD or more often these days  sonos with Quboz via a Westlake modded dac.
I know people will turn their nose up on sonos but it is a very system. I guess in my head I don't understand how spending £2k on a streamer will improve this. Am I missing something?

You may or may not be missing something, it depends on how you want to access your music. Despite being something of a Luddite, I sold my old system last year and bought a UnitiServe to put all my music on. All my CDs are banished to the loft and the music is accessible via few clicks on the iPad. I think it's great, but others prefer having their music on a hard drive and playing via a DAC. I've never tried that, so can't compare, but either way you get rid of those CDs and their horrid jewel cases. A streamer is also a really easy way to listen to Internet radio, again all available via the iPad with no fiddling with a computer.

Why do they call them jewel cases anyway?

Cant think of anything less that I would like to put any jewels in than a jewel case

I don't regret moving to streaming for a second even though I am doing it in a half arsed way by using my UQ2 as a streamer into my Hugo.  Sound quality is excellent and the convenience is nothing short or brilliant.  My CDs are in carry cased to use in the car or when we are away and all the cases are in the loft.  As an added bonus every mobile device in the house, plus our PC and laptop, can access the music on our server whcih is really useful.

I fall into the crusty old 1960's hippy category who still keeps a turntable to play the big black things from a misspent yoof,  but I am open to moving with (but not ahead) of the cutting edge.

I have spent a long time researching & listening to streamers & also spent time helping others install a mix of makes & methods including Sonos.  I like the Sonos for its simplicity & ease of use,  but it is limited to 16/44 (at the moment)  & is in reality not better or worse than CD in SQ terms.

Earlier this year I sold up my trusty/lovely CDX2 & jumped in the deep end with NDX & Synology NAS.  I learnt a lot very quickly - mostly thanks to the very helpful folks on this forum. The added bonus of being able to play HiRes 24bit & also iRadio has made it a very enjoyable experience in both SQ gains & expanding my appreciation of new music - in short I have never regretted  one minute.

From Wikipedia;

According to one publication,initial attempts at packaging CDs were unsatisfactory. When the new design, by Peter Doodson, was found to be "virtually perfect" it was dubbed the "jewel case".Another publication quotes Doodson describing that he "specified polished ribs as they pick up the light and shine" and states that the resulting appearance led to the name.

Jewel cases are excellent when used with dedicated shelving. They allow the CD to be handled only at the edges. What I find horrid are so-called green packaging or "eco-sleeves" which make it impossible to withdraw the CD without touching the readable surface.

Sorry to digress, but if I don't speak out on behalf of jewel cases who will?
