Quick q re network switch - noise?

Posted by: Dave***t on 17 October 2014

Not had any experience with network switches before, but today I hooked up a little Netgear FS305 switch between my NAS, airport express and UQ2, i.e. to create an audio-only section of my network.

I definitely like what it's done for the network and the qute, but it's emitting a high pitched noise which I can hear clearly when there's no music playing.

My instinct is that this means it's faulty, and it should be completely silent. But thought I'd ask others who've used similar equipment for similar ends - is it normal for switches to make a noise?

No.

Out of interest, is your name unprintable?

Concise. Nice. Back it goes. Thanks.

And no, it's just Hunt. But the pseudonym I used to use for an old band is, and the forum name (just copied over from previous forum accounts) equivocates between the two. Probably best not to think about it too much!

Ah, I see. I received a job application once, in which the applicant stated, in the reasons for applying section 'I have always wanted to work for the County Council', unfortunately omitting the o from County. That application went in the bin.

Did you first check to see if they were dyslexic?  They may not have been able to see that the 'o' was missing.

Don't worry, I was simplifying the situation for effect. They absolutely did not meet the person specification.

Thanks HH, I get a little twitchy about that - I'm dyslexic myself, yet my employer unfortunately decided to change my job to one mainly reading and writing technical documentation.

The end result was a case lodged with an employment tribunal.
