Yosemite, or the disappearance of Logitech Media Server

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 17 October 2014

I have downloaded the new MacOS, and safe for the fact that it looks like it was made for people between 5 and 15, it's fast and works well. Only, my Logitech Media Server doesn't start any more, and I wonder if there will be problems with Naim streamers too.

Any experience so far?

M.

nServe is working fine. I don't have LMS on my MBP, only on NAS devices. Agree with your comments on look and performance. It has a slightly cartoonish look to it, but everything seems very slick in operation.

I am perhaps a bit old-fashioned, and not so comfortable pushing all my private data outside of my LAN. The primary benefit of Yosemite seems to be the much tighter integration between OS-X and iOS. But this is achieved by beaming everything up to the Cloud, which in turn rains down on all your Apple devices, OS-X and iOS alike.

Perhaps adding to my paranoia was that the first question asked after the upgrade was whether I wanted to completely encrypt my hard drive...

I agree with your paranoias... Luckily, I am not very knowledgeable about iCloud and all that, but if the time has come when one should know about security and privacy deeply, before installing an update of the OS on a personal computer, perhaps it's already too late to worry about it.

Security seems to have become the key word of our times. And I suppose I would be taken for an old-fashioned left wing nostalgic if I said that 'security' seems to work best when nothing has happened...

Back to servers: I need the LMS because I stream with a Squeezebox Classic from my MacBook and I know of no other way to make my Mac seen by the SB.

Thanks for your reply,

Max

The nightly build of 7.7.4 is rumoured to work. You will find it here, third one down on the list:

Fused,

THANKS. I downloaded and it works, apparently, ok. BTW, the spot on the sofa where I usually sit with the Mac is, mysteriously, blind to the Net and any internet operation is slow and difficult (and yet I don't change spot: power of laziness) - yet, since I installed the new OS, the wi-fi connection works well there too...

Thanks again,

Max

If your are 'paranoid' then Litte Snitch is your friend:

Interesting, thanks. BTW, I don't think anyone defending his/her privacy today can be defined 'paranoid' (I know you're kidding - more or less); we are slowly being turned into telematic slaves, control will be total in a few years. As for those who think it all is only progress, and we are 'paranoid', well I wish they were right.

I have noticed that wireless throughput seems to have improved with Yosemite, so this all makes sense to me. If you hold down the Alt key (Option key in "old" Mac lingo) at the same time as clicking on the WiFi logo on the top right of your screen, you will see the current performance of your WiFi connection. Key parameters are RSSI, noise and TX rate.

I am glad LMS is now working again.
