Bitperfect music streaming services and Naim

Posted by: phosphocreatine on 20 October 2014

Hi to everybody !

I have to admit of being a little bit angry with Naim not implementing Qobuz or other bitperfect music streaming services in their streamers, but I recently discovered that the French company is in a sort "chapter 11" procedure and the other competitors are having little success.

Maybe this is the reason why Naim stays away from them ? Is there a possible bright future for this services ?

I cannot advocate enough finding another solution. At least with an attached computer or what ever you can find other solutions easily.

You can purchase an Intel NUC pc, virtually silent for like £150, this will stream what ever the hell you like at all resolutions straight into your streamer. Hide it behind the hifi rack, enjoy life.

+1 to what garyi says. Although we are Applephiles, the Mini connected to our SuperNait is a proper computer and can bring in whatever internet feed or source we desire. We use SPIDIF so no "UPnP" or other compatibility issues....

Screen and keyboard for initial set up and then just use the iPad with VNC or screen sharing for maintenance and use the iTunes remote app to control the music. That's how i use mine.

Speaking as someone with two mac minis in the house, you simply do not need one to run for dedicated music duties, its over kill

An intel nuc is as silent, as small, as pretty, a quarter of the price and just as capable. Put something like Daphile or Vortexbox on it and you have a fully fledged player/server controllable from any browser or smartphone/tablet on your network. Outputs to DSD capable DACs as well. The only caveat being the cheaper nucs do not have optical out so you would need a USB/SPDIF convertor.
