Naim app Android version 1.1

Posted by: TJ on 21 October 2014

We have released version 1.1 of the naim app on Android to the Google play store. It will probably be with you this evening.

Lots of general bug fixes including:

- Multiroom control
- Fixes to internet radio and UPnP browsing
- Fixes to volume control

Great, thanks for the update. I'm getting an issue with album art with the updated version. Artwork is displayed at a low resolution - this was the case with the previous version, too, was hoping it might be fixed in the update. But now there's a second artwork issue in that when picking an album to display, the artwork is barely visible because it's nearly transparent. It's as if it was supposed to 'fade in' from being transparent but only got as far as the first couple of frames of the animation.

Pressing anything on the screen seems to make it appear properly (albeit still low resolution).

Will see how the rest holds up as time goes on.

Edit: just to be clear, this is when browsing UPnP.

Yes, on my nexus5 the cover is nearly invisible, too. Scrolling the tracklist in the album folder makes the cover appear.

Still can't get the volume control to work properly, the mute works but no response with the + or - keys.

Works fine on the ipad mini but not on the HTC android version.........

The volume controls are offset to the left and the plus and minus are too close to the mute button making it easy to accidentally mute the audio. The mute button doesn't appear to change when muted so when accidentally pressed while changing volume you can't see from the icon why there is no longer any sound coming from the speakers. Poor design IMHO.

App crashes when changing backdrop colour. Crashes on return to app. Album art not shown for UpnP now playing then appeared after changing inputs a few times. Streamer lost ability to talk to upnp server or iradio. Had to change from dhcp to static and then back to dhcp to get upnp input to reinitialise and start working again. Ndx 3.22 sw

Weird. I don't see any + or - volume buttons on the now playing screen, just a slider with a mute button next to it.

Thank you, two problems I experienced fixed: 1) no long crashes on startup after long device sleep; 2) volume control working, although it's a tad confusing at first that the relative position of the control point is relative to the maximum volume setting on the renderer (60 in my case).

I too still can't control volume on my Moto G. I agree that volume controls are too close together and offset to the left.

On Nexus 5 I do not see +/- buttons for the volume, too. It would be interesting, because the slider is not very exact to handle. Also a visual feedback of the current volume level is missing (not only while changing the volume.) So in most cases I just use the normal remote to control the volume.

The main issue that I have is when adding a single track from the UPnP library to the playlist, that I miss the three dots for the sub menu and touch the library entry instead. This breaks (stops) the currently playing music, erases the playlist and starts all over with a new playlist what I did not want. I do not dare to press this menu dots no more while the music is playing. Instead I move over to the ipad mini that seems not to have this issue. It seems that the touch area around the dots is too small on android. Maybe the area does have a kind of padding where you can touch through to the library entry.

Also it still would be great to be able to configure the behaviour when touching a library entry. I would prefer to add the track at the end of the playlist as the default.

But it is great that the library entries do show the track times. I think this was not the case in the first version? Now the track times are missing only in the play list.

Thanks for the update on android.

I am using both iOS and android apps and they work fine. Would it be an option to design the volume control in such a way that whenever my Superuniti is playing from any source to have the volume control layed over the log in screens of samsung  phone and iphone / ipad? Spotify does the same when it is playing. So no need to enter the phone or ipad with access codes, opening up the naim app and then adjusting the volume. In such a way that whenever it is playing phone and ipad recognize this and display volume control for naim? Controlling the volume for me is used quite a lot... this would be very helpful for my daily life!

Just a thought....

+1

Samsung S4 running latest Android controlling an NDX with 3.21 firmware. Volume controls now offset to the left on the app. Previously the volume keys were centred and the + key and mute worked but now only mute works.

Works much better on a Galaxy tab running Android 4.4.2. with a Super uniti

I can now use Upup which was a 90% nogo before. The volume is still sometime had a mind of its own and I do not see the mute button others are mentioning but at least it plays.

Radios FM and Internet ok .

Thanks

Good progress. No doubt will improve so a good step.

I think you only get the +/- buttons for streamers that are controlling an external preamp via system automation. If your streamer has a digitally controlled volume such as a Qute then you get the slider.

I also find this to be a problem. The non tech users in the household find it hard to accurately operate the new n-Stream and often accidentally tap the right hand side of the track name blank area instead of the ellipsis.

If there were a way to exit the app (which might also help some other issues), it'd be easier. Just have the app stay connected until told otherwise. Like bubbleupnp. Given that Naim equipment tends to be left turned on, it'd also make sense.

But yeah, lock screen and drop down notification area rudimentary controls & track playing info would be good. The now playing info could also be used to avoid having to unlock the device to see what track iradio stations were playing.

Maybe I'm being thick, but I've tried this several times now and it insists I tell it about my Mu-So... Sorry, I don't have one. I have an HDX and a Supernait 2. Can I not get an app to connect directly to the HDX and allow me to operate that from my Galaxy Tab? Come to think of it, why are Naim writing several Apps for different Operating Systems (Windows Vista/7/8/10, MacOS, IOS-5/6/7, Android etc.), when all we really need is a Web Services App so we can all access the product by any standard web browser. That make it completely client platform agnostic and no further need to worry about versions coming down the pipeline form all the IT hardware suppliers... :-)

I think the new naim app is for streamers.

http://www.naimaudio.com/news/...-and-android-devices

This link mentions the following:

"The Naim app requires Apple software version iOS7 and Android version 4.0 and above and is compatible with the following Naim streaming products:

mu-so, UnitiQute, UnitiQute 2, UnitiLite, NaimUniti, NaimUniti 2, SuperUniti, ND5 XS, NDX, NDS, NAC-N 172 XS"

The HDX is not mentioned so presumably is controlled using the nserve app.

Posted on: 27 October 2014 by R2

Yes I see that, but nserve does not appear in Google's Play Store. So I'm guessing that not available for Android yet. Lets be honest the HDX touch screen is great but only half the size of my HTC phone! I'm getting fed up carrying my reading glasses around... :-)

I'm having problems navigating the UPnP database tree on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (Android 4.4.2) and also my Motorola Moto G phone (Android 4.4.4).  The UPnP server is a Qnap TS-119 NAS running Minimserver.  Player is Unitiqute2.

On the tablet, when I select "genre", I get just the timer icon circling indefinitely until I turn the tablet from landscape to portrait orientation (or vice versa).  Then the genre options appear.  They are retained when I rotate back into the original orientation.  The same problem can occur on other selections further down the tree.

On the phone, when I select the "genre" option, I just get the timer icon circling indefinitely. (Alternative orientations aren't available).

No problems with the BubbleUPnP app.

This is looking very encouraging - working well on a Samsung Galaxy S3 and an earlier Google Nexus 7. Both of mine do not have + or - controls, only the slider, will that change - I guess the same level no that is displayed on my NAC-N 172 would make sense.

Other apps I've tried also use the device volume control to control volume, but this doesn't, might be handy.

Will there be options to stream from another app, Spotify, Quboz, Tidal via the app in the future?

I see the Info link is available only on the dreaded Apple, will this transition in the future?

Same problem, or even worst, can't navigate at all in UPnP. when turning the tablet, menu show for a second.

Samsung GT-P3113, Android 4.2.2, Naim version 1.1.

Does anyone know how to tell the Naim App to instruct the android device to NOT go into sleep mode whilst playing. I used BubbleUpnp before and this was an option. Is there a similar setting on the Naim app?

Posted on: 30 October 2014 by gert

You could use another helper app for this. I recommend "power toggles" that offers many, many switches that you can put into a widget or into the notification bar of the device. One of the switches is a display always on switch.

Thanks I'll have a look at that. Not sure if it will do exactly what I want though i.e. stop sleep when actually playing but DO allow sleep when not playing even when app is still running.

The toggle app is not doing this automatically. You have to turn on and off the behaviour manually. But I think it is better than nothing.

Can anybody reproduce this issue? I had this two times now. When starting to play a CD with the normal remote or the iOS app and after a while when listening to the CD I start the android app on a nexus 5 and open the track list of the CD, the music does a small stutter (gap), but continues to play after this. But I am not sure yet if it is important to start the CD with another remote than the android app.

I get this regularly when playing NAS -> UnitiQute controlled by Nexus 7. The sequence is as follows: Start to play something with the Naim app on the Nexus 7, then move on to do something else, return to the Naim app, touch the bottom strip showing the currently-playing track, brief stutter.
