Naim app Android version 1.1
Posted by: TJ on 21 October 2014
We have released version 1.1 of the naim app on Android to the Google play store. It will probably be with you this evening.
Lots of general bug fixes including:
- Multiroom control
- Fixes to internet radio and UPnP browsing
- Fixes to volume control
Installed iOS 8.1.1 yesterday. Naim app does not crash anymore. "Not this album" is working fine now. Also, long press album cover then press "play now" the album will play from track 1 instead of track 2. Constant crashing of the app was driving me crazy. Very happy now. It seems that some of the app's problems widely discussed here are caused by bugs in the previous versions of iOS. I am using iPad Air and NDS.
Received my Nexus 5 2 days ago and I'm sure that the phone will want to update to Lollypop asap. I saw this is on hold due to a text messaging bug with Vodafone, but when this is sorted out I will get the latest Android release. So let's see how fast Naim is able to bring out an update to solve the compatibility issues.

When it comes to working with Apple products any 3rd party software or hardware company has my 100% sympathy... It seams every time Apple bring out an update everything changes and stops working. As a supplier of computer hardware I know what a pig Apple updates can be :-(
Naim has released an Android update to fix the lollipop issue.
Those of us on Samsung wait for Samsung to introduce it for their Galaxy phones. Early 2015, it is said.
Meanwhile back in the real world, can anyone tell me
- how to get artwork in the USB screen on the Android Naim
- whether the app works in landscape mode on their phone?
I can get landscape on the tablet (Asus) but not on the phone.
Thanks

Yes, but I also saw this problem in KitKat.
@Tony and Fernando. Did you update to 1.1L:

@JSH, Probably not the answers you want to hear but the streamer products do not support cover images from the USB input and the naim app is portrait only when running on a Phone.

Still happens frequently for me as well on my G3 (so still on 4.x). Updating to 1.1L made no difference.
Yes, I updated, otherwise it would not have worked at all as it used to crash on startup. However, it still crashes occasionally when coming back from background, which 1.1 also did. I've sent at least one report via the standard bug report popup.
Welcome; agreed, if it worked. Overdue; certainly
"The point of these posts is to give Naim a prod and say this is not good enough"
They make much of their association with Bentley; seriously, would Bentley put anything in their cars as bad as this and say it "well, it's just a first shot". I doubt it
And would you pay £2.99 for it in the Google Play Store or would you get a refund? I'd get a refund personally and wait until Naim got it right.

- That's the point of yours certainly, but please don't speak on behalf of everyone else. It's still early days, and I'm happy with progress. I've tried Bubble etc and this is a step forward.
In what way is it a step forward from Bubble?
IMHO: BubbleUPnP has the better GUI. It may be too complicated for some users, but I like that it is highly configurable. E.g. what happens when touching a track in the library (I want it to be enqueued by default without interrupting the current playlist). Also it offers UPnP-search not only a filter on the current displayed list (requires a server that supports it as well. Synology media server does not, but minimserver does). You can trigger a server rescan with minim server. There a re probably more things. The volume control is much better when using the +/- keys in the notification bar or on the lock screen. The slider of the naim-app is not very good to use. It does not display the current level and it jumps to fast when moving the slider a bit. Also I like that the cover is displayed on the lock screen of the device including navigation control buttons.
The big advantage of the Naim app is that you do not have problems with none gapless playback or incorrectly repeating tracks or no track advancing (sudden stop) and so on. The playlist that is maintained by the uniti itself is just playing. Also you can control the whole uniti with CD-playback, webradio, etc.
In the last few months BubbleUPnP, which used to be fairly reliable, has become barely usable with Synology and Unitiqute for those reasons. The developer was not willing or able to correct the issues even though I sent him several detailed logs. So, the naim app, even with its current limitations, is a big improvement on my ability to manage my listening.
@TJ; your post here of yesterday
Why?
Jota; a very good question. The Naim android app is underwhelming at best. Its advantage is the ability to switch around between Upnp, USb, iRadio etcwithout switching to Namote.
Bubble can be unrelaible as Fernando says; I personally find UpnPlay is better though a bit quirky
I take it you're not too keen then?
Works better on a tablet than a phone it seems to me
At £1.99 I'd probably seek a refund from Google Play!
Good job its free then
Yep. That's about what it's worth in its current state. If Naim improve it then its value might rocket to £1.99
Be grateful to @TJ to explain the thinking behind his note of yesterday on this thread
Hi,
Can anyone tell me where the volume control is on the app?
Thanks
Steve

After initiating Play, you should see track listing, and a thumbnail cover image in the bottom left hand corner. Click on that and you will bring up the volume control. Simple, isn't it?

Cheers I'll try that when I get home tonight :-)
