from the iMac to the Unitilite

Hi,

When I play a musical dvd on my iMac or when I play music on Qobuz, I'd like the sound to go from the iMac to the Unitilite. Is that possible ? If so, how can I do that ?

Have a good day

Depending on the spec of your iMac, you should find that one of the headphone sockets doubles as a mini-toslink optical out. You can connect this via an optical cable to your unitilite (either mini-toslink to toslink or a standard toslink cable with a mini adapter at one end).

If physical connection isn't possible, you could try an airport express plugged in near the unitilite, and connected as above to send the audio from the iMac via your network/airplay. I do this with a Windows machine and it works fine.

In terms of the express depending on the speed of your network, you may find the sound does not sync with your DVD.

As Garyi says, the speed of your network for the audio matters, as does any latency in video processing in your TV.

The safest way to get good sync, is to (if possible) take the SPDIF audio out of the TV to your music player. This assumes your HDMI output from your iMac also carries audio to your TV, and that your TV has a digital audio output (most do these days). Unfortunately, I have found that it is difficult to set it up so that my Mini plays audio from both SPDIF and the HDMI output suimiultaneously so I have to manually switch it in the audio settings on the Mini. We (lazily) end up using SPDIF to the SN DAC/amp directly and video separately to the TV. Less than perfect sync.

Does that mean the optical cable mentioned by Dave*** is a better solution ?

If memory serves, and based on how I used to do it with an iMac about 4 years ago, the computer should have a mini stereo out that can serve as optical out as long as you have the correct connector… you will need an optical cable with a mini stereo optical jack on one end, and a standard toslink on the other.
