Seriously Considering UQ2 or V1

Posted by: Don Dadda on 31 October 2014

Hi all

I'm not new to HiFi but new to Naim in the sense of considering one but known of them for many years.

I am redecorating the house after refurb work and the dining room is next on the to do list. I've decided to sell the existing hifi in that room and go for an all in one streamer with built in amp. I am seriously considering the UnitiQute ( V1 or V2) which i have shortlisted with the Cambridge Audio Minx Xi. I know there's a huge different in price between them  so would expect the SQ to be better and other stuff  being 3 x times more but both fit the requirements and interest me to have a demo.

I found out that the UQ does not support streaming services as such which is fine as i don't subscribe to any but it much appreciated if someone can try the following station and post back if it works and not getting a media  licence message : 'http://www.di.fm/soulfulhouse/.'

I listen to  wide range of genre but do listen to that particular station a lot and  this would hinder me from getting the UQ if it can't play it and don't want to buy it only to find out it can play the stations i want.

On the V1, does gapless and FF\FR come natively or to upgrade the firmware to get them? and if so which firmware version upgrade does this?

I already have a Cambridge Audio NP30 audio streamer on another setup, but it does not have FF\FR and has stopped playing the station above citing license issue  which it had no problem with before and cannot add the station as a service. This same station is still able to play on my Squeezebox Touch, PC and smartphone using the station's streaming app. Having the NP30 I naturally looked on the CA MINX Xi but being basically the same as NP30 but with a amp and other little bits, will suffer the same issues as  mentioned  above so have semi ruled it out

The setup it will be replacing is a Marantzx PM7001Ki, SqueezeBox Touch and will need to connect to a TV, Marantz UD7006 (Films and CD) and Nakamich RX202E Cassette deck ( yes, i i'm one of the remaining few that still uses cassette tapes)

Many thanks

+1   I found in the menu where you can search by "station name" but theres not a lot of options...how to enter a URL?

Also, I tried the UQ2 with Monitor Audio RX6 and at any volume under obnoxiously loud in a 3000 cu/ft room it leaves little to be desired.  Get really loud thought (~85 db) and you'll want more amp as the strain creeps in and its PRAT comes apart...just isn't desined for this.  I am however pushing HiFiman HE-500s with it to eye-watering volumes!  I'm seriously thinking of skipping upgrading my main system to a DAC V1 and just using this in it...(would need a USB-SPDIF converter), the UQ2 really is that good.

I found the answer in the manual. You have to add the station via the 'naim vTuner' website.

http://myradio.naimaudio.com/s...AuthLogin/SignIn.asp

Adding the stations url was fine and seem to be accepted but when trying to play, My UQ says 'Cant Play - Station unavailable'. When you added the station you have the option to play it from the site, but this open the local media player which in my case is window media player. I would expect it to play via the UQ and not the laptop.
I'm not sure what the problem is but think it could be a setting somewhere  rather than the UQ being restricted from playing them.

I say that because the above posters, Solid Air  and Daveas can both play the station. Solid has the new board and Daveas still has the original board - same as mine. So if i am right, Solid's board is 24/192khz and Daveas is the 24/96.  I thought this might of been the problem but since my UQ1 is the same as  Daveas's UQ1, ruled it out. However, Brubacca who also tried the station, stated he could not connect and his UQ1 his is the same as mine.

I added another station, Jazz FM, which i know plays anywhere and on everything (streamer wise) and i get the same problem which makes me think i haven't done something or missed a setting.

So what am i missing? Any takers?

With regards to the MA RS6, you're right. The UQ is  not designed to be used in that way as its no party freak and i'm not surprised that the UQ is straining with the RS6 because even with them being 6 ohms, the UQ still will not reach the recommended minimum power requirements which is 40w. The UQ will get to 37w approx with a 6ohm load. That will place serious pressure on the amp and speakers to the point of damage. Better matching speakers would yield better results.

On another note, i said i will post back with my thoughts as a newbie to Naim, but i have been poorly with the cold/flu.

Anyhoo, the Unitiqute is aptly named as its is cute. Small and lighter than expected, but built like  a Sherman tank or its made for disposing bombs.

I gave it a good session with all sorts of genre and the quality is astounding. Gapless is proper  seamless Gapless and not some half arsed attempt. My wharfs 10.2's seems to like its new partner very much. My fear was that i would need to upgrade them sometime in the future if i went this route, but to my ears and with the right material, together they make a very formidable team. Fantastic in fact. This may change a bit when they are in their proper place as my living room floor is not the ideal place for the speakers, but so far the future is bright. sorry 'Green'.

Feeding lesser quality material to the UQ is like showing a red flag to a bull. It will tolerate it but lets you know in no uncertain terms that it does not like it. Yet it will play it to the best of its ability,

The naim android app is also quite good but still needs a a bit of work. Searching for particular tracks  can be a bit finicky. If i just try scrolling through the folders it may not see the one i looking for but will find it if i enter the full name. Same for tracks. There are some other niggles but it could be just be my expectations or the fact its Apple App rehashed to work on Android.

At least it does not crash every time i start another app, swap screens or when the screensaver kicks in, like the CA app does.

If i can just get those stations to work i be perfectly happy

WAHEY!! SORTED!!

I went back to basics and actually found the station i wanted in its very extensive library. I admit i discounted it from the beginning  without even checking as before, with the exception of JazzFM, i had to add them in manually all the streamers i had before

With regards to adding them in manually, I've still not quite fathom that yet. I worked out why it kept wanting to open wmp when trying to play from the vtuner site and change the 'Type' to WMA when adding the station which opened up a internet session and played via that. That's fine and dandy and goes someway in proving what i was thinking, but it does not solve the problem and play on the UQ.

So to me, it has to be something i'm not doing or missed when adding the station. Not that's its a problem anymore since i'm a happy bunny with my stations able to play, but  it is something i want to crack.

There's no FF\ FR on these even though the remote has the FF\FR buttons and the manual does not say they are functional dependent. I.e, only works if, on or with... so i am going to have to dig a bit deeper on that

I have also been informed that one of the digital inputs is or can be made to be fixed gain ( tv will be connected to that if so), but they couldn't confirm whether that feature is available on the UQ1

Is that possible or just wishful thinking?
