Grayson Perry portraits series C4

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 03 November 2014

Watched this on TV after my wife saw the first in the series. Rarity for me to watch a TV prog; suspect the first of the year!

Really enjoyed it. Perry very engaging, articulate and intelligent. The last portrait he created was both an affecting story and I thought a piece of strikingly effective art. I rarely like 'narrative art' as such, generally preferring a less decorative and more abstract style but I was really taken by him and his work.

I guess the prominence of his alter-ego 'Clare' has distracted me from appreciating his obvious talent as an artist, and storyteller.

Good stuff. one more to come next week I think.

Anyone else catch it?

Yep, he's much more engaging in this guise. Excellent series.

An excellent series by a very engaging presenter. He did a similar one last year on C4 where he produced a series of tapestries, based on the Rakes Progress. Like others, I had always judged him on his cross dressing, and worse still, his motorcycle....

Just goes to show that you should never judge books by the cover.

You may be aware already, but he presented the Reith lectures semi-recently. My memory's a bit hazy, but I think I remember them being pretty good. I believe recordings are available from the BBC's online archive. Along with the In Our Time archive, a great resource.

Just search the net for 'Reith lectures' and it should be easy to find.

Thanks, I did recall that. Will dig them out.

Artists talking about their work are not always a great listen, he seems refreshingly interesting and unpretentious.

Yes both series have been very enjoyable so far - well worth watching.
