Would you buy an electric bike?

Posted on: 08 November 2014 by winkyincanada

There are bunch of those cars in our neighbourhood. They are very nice vehicles indeed. You can now place an order for the P85D that has 691hp and is faster to 100kph than a Ferrari 458 Italia. Faster than any AMG Mercedes or BMW M-series ever produced. The fastest 4-door production car in history.

The Tesla S has topped the ratings at many car mags. Smooth quiet and refined. There is nothing else like it. I simply cannot imagine why, if I was in the market for a 4-door luxury saloon, I would choose anything else.

Range at around 400km is excellent if you drive reasonably. Certainly enough for 99% of day-to-day driving.

My wife and I will likely purchase the new Tesla X-series 4WD X-over vehicle (available late 2015) in a couple of years.

I would. I think the electrid assist bikes are awesome. I have no need for one right now, but as I get older, or if circumstances change (longer commute), I'd have no hesitation.

Well, Winky, I'd ask have you heard the wonderful noise an AMG Mercedes makes under acceleration?

That would be reason enough for me to chose one over a Tesla, but then I'm a bit of a 'petrol head'.

Sure. But the reason that those engines sound "wonderful" to us is that we are conditioned to associate that noise with the associated performance. I think our brains will be quickly reprogrammed to associate the near silent slingshot of a P85D with ultimate performance. The sound a car makes is a pretty thin reason (for me, anyway) to choose a car that is more expensive (S-class, at least - E-class is a bit less $$), and slower.

When BMW and Mercedes jump on board with mainstream electric offerings, we will see the real revolution. Tesla are licencing technology and will be supplying batteries to the big guys.

No sardonicism intended. I'm not sure how you read that into my reply. I really like these cars.

I want one that will do 0-100 kph in 12 seconds and go for 1200 km between charging on a my solar array that will come as well if i could afford it!!

Then we will be playing, but this is a start!

Interestingly I saw an article on an electric Harley Davidson recently, if you can convince motorbike riders, even Harley ones, to move to electric power there is hope for all of us.  I think its inevitable but I will miss the snarl of a superbike engine and the smell of petrol, oil and hot engine when its all gone.  I've driven a couple of electric cars that we use in work and they are surprisingly nippy although its damned weird to have no engine noise whenyou drive them

I bought a Currie iZip a couple of years ago:

It's heavy compared to a normal bicycle, so the electric pedal assist remains engaged at all times, and I simply throttle up for going uphill. At age 58, and after multiple lumbar surgeries, the main thing I was looking for was smooth, consistent pedaling, and with a minimum of jarring movements. This bicycle works well for me -- it has greatly extended the range I can travel and allows me to take good advantage of our city's extensive path system.

ATB.

Do you like the fact more cyclist, pedestrians and wildlife will undoubtedly be killed on the roads due to silent cars.

It's hard to believe you do.

Posted on: 08 November 2014 by George J

Oh no! The risk is more from those enjoying the racket their engines make, than those who are simply getting from A to B. On a cycle you can hear them coming, but cannot get out of the way fast enough ...

The lack of noise may make motorists more rational about speed!

From electric motor to pedal power in just 2 hs. I just love this forum!

They're not as silent as you might think. The tyre noise is the main sound that you hear from cars (rapidy accelerating AMG Mercedes notwithstanding). Teslas certainly don't sneak up on me when I'm riding. They are just as easy to hear as any other car. I get passed by at least one, and sometimes several, each day.

If they are just as easy to hear as any other car they can't be near silent.

An electric Toyota overtook me a couple of weeks ago when I was out on my bike. I didn't hear it coming, it gave me bit of a shock when it appeared at the side of me.

No way was it as noisy as an "explosion engine" car.

Near silent from the the inside. In any case, hearing the car as it runs me down doesn't make me any less run down. (I didn't know Toyota were making electric cars).

Tesla have just taken over the old Mercedes site in Crawley.

This is quite interesting. It tracks the electric bike's trajectory in closing the gap the traditional bikes in terms of speed at the TT. They are now just shy of the 1984 outright record. They have closed 4 decades in 4 years.

And then there's this...

It's great to see evolution yet sad to see the demise of petrol engines.  In the end though emissions may be reduced by electric read port, but there will be more nuclear power stations.

Perhaps we'll condition ourselves to accept that compromise.
